Pay phones are quickly becoming a thing of the past. LinkNYC is a communication system that is bringing the concept of New York’s pay phones into the 21st Century. This system of kiosks or “links” will offer services like free wifi, tablets for web surfing and charging stations. What’s more is that the links will be free to the public in every sense of the word; they cost nothing to use and are free to taxpayers.

Over the next few years, 7,500 links are projected to be set up all over the 5 boroughs. Beta testing for the new devices launched on Tuesday so that New Yorkers can try them out and give their feedback. The devices are already looking promising because of their gigabit Wi-Fi. This Wi-Fi promises to be 100x faster than standard public Wi-Fi. This Translates to some serious productivity if your device is in range of one of the link’s hotspots. Between the service radius of up to 400 feet per link and the 7,500 that may be installed around the city, urbanites may never have to go out in public without super fast Wi-Fi at their service again. Though 911 calls cannot be made on the links yet, a few are available around town for city goers to experience the speedy Wi-Fi.
