Screen Shot 2016-03-22 at 12.15.48 PMThe Lower Manhattan Development Corporation has awarded The Battery $6 million to complete its construction budget on a new playground, prospectively titled The Battery Playscape.

At 1.4 acres, the playscape would be the largest playground in the downtown area and would boast a climbing wall, slides, tree houses, sand dunes, sprinklers, a jungle gym and a puppet theater.

The Battery Conservancy already has $8 million in donations for the project and permits with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. The additional 6 million will kickstart the project and allow construction to begin this year.

“It’s got to happen this year,” told Battery Conservancy founder and president Warrie Price to Commercial Observer. “Just because the momentum is there, we are ready to go. It’s an unappreciated site for what we have got Downtown.”
