After a long awaited absence, the popular musical version of the famous Victor Hugo novel Les Miserables returns to its Broadway at the Imperial Theater. The play first began running back in 1987 originally at the Broadway Theater, in 1990 it was relocated to the Imperial where it spent a 13 year run ending production in May 2003.
Since its Broadway debut more than two decades ago, the play has been a triumphant success, winning numerous Tony Awards such as Best Musical and Best Musical Score. The music was adapted to the story by Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil in French, with the English translation completed by Herbet Kretzmer.
It’s songs have become iconic pop culture fixtures and include,“I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “Stars,” “Bring Him Home,” “Do You Hear the People Sing?,” “One Day More,” and more.
The newest version, includes an All-Star Broadway cast which includes Erin Clemons, Emily Cramer (Mary Poppins), Natalie Charle Ellis (Forbidden Broadway), Jason Forbach, Heidi Giberson (Cinderella), Nathaniel Hackmann, Andrew Kober (Hair), Chris McCarrell, Melissa Mitchell, Dennis Moench (Mary Poppins), Adam Monley (Mamma Mia!), Betsy Morgan (A Little Night Music), Melissa O’Neil (Jesus Christ Superstar), Max Quinlan, John Rapson, Terance Reddick, Arbender Robinson (Hair), Christianne Tisdale (On a Clear Day You Can See Forever) and Aaron Walpole (Jesus Christ Superstar).
This new production will be directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell, and costume designs will be done by Andreane Neofitou who was the original designer for the first production in 1987.
Audiences have been lining up for the show in previews and the official opening night is set for March 23.
