Common core standardized testing has become a necessary evil for elementary school students. Fortunately, a mother and serval downtown institutions have created a helpful resources for the impending spring tests. Pace University’s education students are tutoring local 3rd, 4th and 5th graders as part of a unique, free program supported by the Howard Hughes Corporation.

The Kubemas Tutoring Program takes place from September through May, providing one-on-one instruction to prepare students for state exams as well as language, reading and math.

Lugi Hernandez, a parent and founder of the tutoring program, was eager to find a resource to give her child additional help to succeed in school and knew that she couldn’t be alone in thinking this. Together with the Howard Hughes Corporation, she created the program that students can utilize free of charge and whose tutors/ learning environment are sourced right in the downtown area.

“We are honored to play a role in the vibrant Kubemas community tutoring program and are always looking for ways to support initiatives that foster collaboration and help our neighbors,” explains Phillip St. Pierre, general manager at the Howard Hughes Corporation. “Lugi Hernandez has done a fantastic job making this program for local schoolchildren possible, and Howard Hughes is proud to support it.”

With testing season fast approaching, the program is playing an instrumental role in preparing students to do all well as they can, which will benefit them as well as the schools that they attend.
