Florida is known for many famous beaches, but New Smyrna Beach is perhaps one of the most natural, unassuming, and quaint of all. Central Floridians are quite familiar with this sleepy beach community, as it is the most popular destination of its residents. Only a 55 mile drive east of Orlando and 75 miles from Orlando International Airport, it is easily the best kept secret of all the beaches in Florida.

Stretching nearly 13 miles of white sand beaches, NSB has been voted one of Florida’s best beaches seven times since 2007 by the Orlando Sentinel.  Recently renovated, Flagler Avenue and Canal Street are home to many numerous diverse dining and shopping experiences, as well as many antique shopping boutiques.

Home to many cultural events as well as historical sites, Florida’s second oldest city also offers excellent golf and offshore fishing opportunities. An area rich in history, some highlights include the Ponce Inlet lighthouse and the New Smyrna Mill Ruins. The ruins, a site believed to be the location of a chapel built by Christopher Columbus during his second voyage, is one that makes New Smyrna Beach exceptional.

Downtown Magazine was recently a recipient of a weekend stay at the Ponce de León Towers, a condominium rental facility.

Their recently redecorated 7th floor two bedroom unit sleeps six comfortably and is fully equipped with all the amenities including a washer and dryer. The master bedroom suite offers a king size bed with balcony access to an incredible beach view of the Atlantic Ocean. As is the case with the many condominiums, bed and breakfast, or ocean front hotels, the atmosphere is one of simplicity and serenity.

Unlike the commercialism of Daytona Beach or the upscale luxury of Miami’s South Beach, New Smyrna Beach is a destination for those seeking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is simply one of the best places to just to kick back and enjoy the natural pristine beach environment. The philosophy of this beach is in enjoying the area, as opposed to being focused on the selected residence of choice.

People come to New Smyrna to spend time on the beach with very little time spent indoors. Blessed with spacious beaches, this town prides itself on cleanliness, culture, tranquility, and a hometown personality. So when planning your next visit to one of the infinite beach communities of Florida, consideration should be given to this East Coast gem if your desire is that of unpretentiousness. You will not be disappointed as Downtown Magazine discovered this past weekend.
