Over three years ago, residential areas and businesses throughout the metropolitan area were left to deal with an unforeseen amount of destruction left in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The South Street Seaport Museum was inundated by 5 feet of surging water and forced to close as a result of the damage. However, a combination of emergency aid totaling $11.6 million from both FEMA and the State of New York, along with the resiliency of those dedicated to the preservation of this historical staple of the city has proven to be successful.

South Street Seaport Museum is set to launch its first exhibit since the storm on March 16th, titled “Street of Ships: The Port and Its People”. The apropos title of the exhibit in a way pays homage to South Street’s long-standing moniker, the “Street of Ships.” The exhibition will capture the historical significance of the port and the role it played in shaping the city into one of the premier business epicenters of the world. In addition to displaying 19th century artifacts relating to the port, the exhibit will afford people the opportunity to tour some of the original ships, which have undergone unprecedented restoration.

Visit the museum’s website for more information regarding the exhibit.
