If you or your partner work for a company with a matching gift program, you can make your donation go even further.

All donations are tax-deductible. Additionally, you can share your donation on Facebook and Twitter to help inspire others.

Citymeals On Wheels is also in desperate need of healthy volunteers to assist in meal delivery and bring some friendly companionship to the isolated and infirm. If you are under self-quarantine and would like something kind to do, Citymeals has a phone program to check in on people and say hello. You can also create handmade greeting cards as an activity to do with your kids. It will brighten someone’s day, and yours too.

According to their site, Citymeals was founded in 1981 by longtime New York magazine restaurant critic Gael Greene as a response to the growing crisis of elderly facing a hunger crisis. Teaming up with cookbook author James Beard, Greene reached out the restaurant community and raised funds to send meals out that Christmas. The success of that program led to DFTA Bureau Chief Marcia Stein establishing one of the country’s first public/private partnerships – with the fledgling Citymeals on Wheels operating under the auspices of DFTA – and became the organization’s first executive director. Thanks to this partnership, Citymeals has been able to promise that all public donations will be used entirely for the preparation and delivery of meals, since day one. By 2014, they had served 50 million meals to elderly New Yorkers.

This is a worthy cause to donate to, and we must take care to remember the most vulnerable in this time of uncertainty. They took care of us, let us not forget that.
