CARLA SOZZANI Born in Manut, Italy, former editor in chief of Vogue Italia, founding editor in chief of Italian Elle, as well as Carla Sozzani Editore, a publisher of art, fashion, and design books. Founded 10 Corso Cosmo in Milan, 25 years ago.

Downtown: Name three women that inspire you, and why.

Carla Sozzani: Georgia O’Keeffe, Karen Blixen, and Simone de Beauvoir all inspire me because of their pursuit towards freedom.

Downtown: What has been the secret of your success?

CS: I credit my success to starting anew every day.

Downtown: If you were going to pass on one piece of advice to a young woman looking for success, what would it be?

CS: My advice would be to follow your instinct and listen to the people you respect.

Downtown: In the fight for women’s equality what area do you think needs the most attention?

CS: Women still need to be given more respect personally and professionally.

Downtown: What are you most proud of in your career?

CS: I am most proud of my integrity.

Downtown: Where do you get your confidence?

CS: I’m still learning how to build my confidence. It’s a work in progress.

Downtown: What makes a woman beautiful?

CS: A woman is beautiful when she is secure in herself and her beliefs.

Downtown: What gives you joy?

CS: Nature always brings me joy. It’s calming and inspiring at the same time.
