‘Portraits of America’ Provides Haunting Exhibition at Gagosian Gallery

The Gagosian Gallery will kick off  “Portraits of America,” an impressive exhibition of the works of artistic legends, Diane Arbus and Cady Noland, with a cocktail reception that will take place this evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

“Portraits of America” features two female artists from sequential generations, Diane Arbus (1923-1971) and Cady Noland (b.1956), whose work calls attention to something vaguely disturbing beneath the surface of American life after World War II. Arbus captured portraits of everyday persons, while Noland created sculptural installations that draw from commercialism and the media.

Included in the exhibit is Arbus’ iconic photo, “Identical Twins, Roselle, New Jersey, 1967.” The two girls are dressed in adorable matching outfits. One sister frowns slightly, while the other smiles. What appears at first benign suddenly becomes haunting with deeper inspection. This theme runs throughout the featured pieces.
