The Instagram Blogger Phenomenon – Interview with Helena Glazer of @brooklynblonde1

As we are now in the midst of the Digital Age, Instagram is perhaps the most influential social media platform that millennials are using these days. As the app has gained popularity amongst its users, it has become somewhat of a social media ‘hub’. With a quick scroll on Instagram, one can check the news, see what their friends are up to, and check out the daily happenings of their favorite bloggers.

Bloggers are a huge part of the Instagram community. A plethora of users and influencers are now using bots and automatic Instagram follower tools or paid followers service on Instagrowing to outsource the hard parts of the work.

Over the past few years, bloggers have taken over social media by storm, and there are many bloggers who make a living through their Instagram blogs. It’s truly no wonder as to how some bloggers are able to make a living off of their Instagram pages; with some bloggers boasting over a million followers, companies often pay bloggers to endorse their products, which thus ‘influences’ the blogger’s following to purchase a certain product.

One might wonder, what is it that these bloggers post to gain such massive followings? One factor that surely draws in followers is the fact that many bloggers take their followers through their daily lives – almost like an Instagram reality show. You’d be surprised how interesting it can be to see what somebody eats for breakfast, what kind of shampoo someone uses, and what someone’s favorite pizzeria is in the city. Not to mention, the aesthetically cohesive look of the typical blogger’s profile and the gorgeous outfits they put together each day surely help draw in a crowd.

Perhaps one of the most well-known Instagram bloggers is Helena Glazer of @brooklynblonde1. As her username suggests, Helena is a blogger based in Brooklyn who has amassed a following of over 460,000 followers. On her blog, you will typically see a day in the life of Helena and her adorable son Nate on her ‘Insta Stories’. Helena also discusses topics like interior design, beauty products, and lots of fashion. Her profile mainly features photos of Helena photographed in gorgeous designer outfits on the charming streets of New York. Although the Instagram community is definitely saturated with bloggers, Helena’s blog stands out for a reason. Her content is authentic, and she forms a real bond with her followers through daily interactions and chats.

In order to get a closer look at the life of a blogger, and to get to know Helena even better, we got the chance to speak with her and discuss blogging in New York, being an NYC mom, and remaining unique in the Instagram blogger world (just to name a few topics)!

Q: Your blog has seen so much growth and success lately. In what ways do you think that living in New York has

accelerated your blogging career?

A: From the beginning, New York has been one of the biggest parts of my blog and my overall identity. Being surrounded by so much creativity, open-mindedness and talent is not something that’s easy to find in many other cities. It also doesn’t hurt to have such a beautiful city as my backdrop!

Q: What’s your favorite thing about being a New York mom?

A: I’m a born and raised New Yorker and I know how much that’s shaped me into the person I am today. I was exposed to art, museums, the ballet and so much culture at such a young age. I love being able to give our son the same type of experiences this beautiful city has to offer.

Q: As an influencer, how do you think your followers influence you?

A: Oh man! I learn SO much from my followers. From design hacks to the latest and greatest restaurants. If I have a question, I reach out to my followers for advice and they always stir me in the right direction.

Q: Unfortunately, for every 99 loving comments, there will always be 1 comment full of judgment and hate. How

do you brave the judgment on Instagram from complete strangers?

A: As cliche as it sounds, I’ve been doing this long enough that I’ve developed a thick enough skin. Luckily enough, I don’t get that much negativity, but of course, there will always be that person. On a good day, I laugh it off and roll my eyes. On a bad day, I mutter something to my husband and just delete (or reply and then delete!)

Q: As Instagram has been a platform for so many successful bloggers to grow in recent years, it seems that the
number of up and coming bloggers on the app grows by the day. What advice would you give to this up-and-
coming bloggers who are looking to stand out, get noticed, but still remain unique on Instagram?

A: I wish I had a great answer for this, but even as someone who’s been doing it as long as I have, I still ask myself this question. It’s certainly challenging, but the best somebody can do is be true to themselves. I see many fall into the trap of trying to be a watered down version of someone else that’s really the worst thing someone can do.

The Top Three Trendy NYC Museums You Don’t Want to Miss

New York City: the city of pizza, bagels, yellow taxis and museums. Yes, museums! New York City is home to dozens and dozens of amazing and unique museums which you can find nowhere else. There’s a museum for everyone; from classic historical museums, to museums of math, and even to museums of sex, there is truly a museum to explore to fit anybody’s tastes. We’ve curated a list of three of the trendiest NYC museums that you should not miss out on visiting.

THE TOP THREE TRENDY MUSEUMS IN NYC YOU NEED TO VISIT

1. THE TENEMENT MUSEUM

There is no easier way to time travel than to visit the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side. On a guided tour, you will step into the real homes of America’s past families, some of which date back to the 1800s! It is amazing how well these tenements have been preserved. This museum is perhaps the most historically authentic museum in New York. You will leave this museum with vast amounts of new knowledge. Pro tip: don’t miss out on the gift shop! It’s got some really great and rare finds.

2. MUSEUM OF FOOD AND DRINK

Calling all foodies! This trendy museum will be a dream for you. Head to Williamsburg, Brooklyn to visit the Museum of Food and Drink, or MOFAD. Seriously, why hasn’t anyone thought of this sooner? Stimulating the senses of smell, touch, and taste, MOFAD is one of a kind. Food is truly a common denominator between people of all cultures; we all enjoy it, and we all need it. So why not learn more about it? Some upcoming events at MOFAD include a Bean Cookery with Brooks Headley (great for vegetarians), and a Food Fracas with Mark Kurlansky (great for parents who want to learn more about food choices for their children).

.

3. MUSEUM OF MATHEMATICS

I know, I know – you’re probably thinking, “A museum of math? Nothing could possibly sound more boring”, but I promise you, this museum is FUN! The Museum of Mathematics, or MoMath, is a great place for adults and children alike. This museum is one of the most interactive in the city, and with its trendy NOMAD location, this place makes for a great day’s activity. You will learn about math in the most entertaining way possible. (Be sure to take advantage of child, student, and senior discounts!)

Fitness Friday: Q&A with Tone It Up’s Katrina & Karena

For this week’s Fitness Friday, I set out to ask the popular trainers behind the Tone It Up program, Katrina Scott and Karena Dawn, some questions about the TIU community and its success. We also touched on tips for staying healthy while eating out and on the go, and of course we chatted a bit about the holidays and their newest challenge: The Holiday Hustle!

Since the company’s launch in 2009, Katrina & Karena have built a strong healthy living community for women everywhere. With a dedication to female empowerment and balance, the program is perfect for women of all ages — and the transformations speak for themselves. The programs are quite possibly some of the most encouraging and positive fitness programs I’ve ever come across, and the community they’ve created gives a sense of not being alone in the health and wellness jungle that exists today.

It’s clear that the duo is deeply committed to making healthy living fun and attainable, all the while building friendships and connecting women all over the world. This program is about more than just looking great. It’s about feeling great, too — mentally as well as physically. The programs never get boring, and their dedication to keeping it fun and upbeat means there are always new recipes, challenges, and videos to follow. In the sometimes confusing and unrealistic fitness world, these beach babes bring a perfect mix of motivation, acceptance and sunny, positive vibes.

Tone It Up has become quite the community. Did you ever imagine TIU would get this big?

Katrina: We truly believe in the power of visualization, and from the very beginning, we envisioned creating a community where women could come together to support, motivate, and uplift each other to achieve all their dreams — making fitness fun — and we feel very fortunate that we’ve been able to turn that dream into a reality.

What prompted you to create TIU?

Karena: We wanted to create a place where women from around the world could come together, bond through fitness and nutrition, and find positive girlfriends, just like we did! We met at the gym on a Friday and instantly connected over our passion for health and wellness. We wanted every girl to have that same opportunity and experience!

What are some of the key elements of its success?

Katrina: A key element has been creating an authentic community built on trust. Our community inspires us to work hard every day and is the reason we’ve never given up.  There have been so many moments where we failed and we almost gave up, but we didn’t. Hold on to what ignites you…everything will work out!

Over the summer, you did the TIU Tour and got to meet a lot of TIU’ers. What did you love most about this tour?

Karena: The most amazing part of the Tone It Up Tour was that we were able to connect directly with thousands of women! We worked out, danced, sipped rosé together and heard so many inspiring stories, which we’ll cherish forever.

Any plans on doing something similar next year?

Karena: We have some big plans for 2018!! We’re super excited to release them soon!

You’ve worked a lot with Jillian Michaels. How did you meet her?

Karena: The first time we met her was actually at a small concert at Hotel Cafe when we first started Tone It Up. We were super excited and blurted out that we were starting a fitness community. She was really nice, but we were too scared to ask her for a pic! Years later we connected on Twitter and went out to dinner. We talked about our upcoming tour and in between some sushi, she goes “Count me in!” Never would we have imagined Jillian Michaels would come on tour with us!

You recently launched the Tone It Up app. How is it going so far?

Karena: The Studio Tone It Up app launch is going really well. What makes it so different and special is that you can take fitness classes with your girlfriends from anywhere and connect with women before and after class. You’re never alone working out in Studio Tone It Up. Plus, you can choose from so many different types of workouts like HIIT, yoga, toning, barre, dance, and strength training, track your workouts and goals, and receive texts and motivation from us! Download the app here for a free week pass!

With both LA and New York being cities where you dine out and eat on the go a lot, what are your best tips for staying healthy?

Katrina: Ironically, whenever we’re traveling, we have to be on our ‘A-game’ and feel our best for photo shoots, interviews, or workout video segments. No matter where we are, we keep it Lean, Clean, ‘N Green and follow the guidelines of the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan. When we’re following the Nutrition Plan, we look and feel our best and most confident.

Karena: When you’re dining out, our best tip is not to be afraid to ask for substitutions! Ask for grilled or steamed options instead of fried. Even veggies like Brussels sprouts are often fried. At Italian restaurants, I like to order chicken cacciatore. At Japanese restaurants, sashimi is always a great lean protein option.

The holidays are upon us… what are some of your best holiday tips for sticking to a healthy lifestyle while not depriving yourself of the fun of spending time with loved ones and enjoying yourself?

Karena: My best tip is to stick to a healthy daily routine and make some time to prioritize yourself first thing. I wake up earlier every morning so I have time for coffee, a workout, and a few minutes of meditation. That way, no matter what else happens that day, I feel balanced and centered.

What are some of your favorite holiday recipes?

Katrina: I love holiday cookies! We have some delicious and simple treats here!

And what are you most excited about for the upcoming holidays?

Karena: Spending time with our loved ones and celebrating with the beautiful Tone It Up community!

The TIU21 just ended & The Holiday Hustle Challenge launched this week. Tell us more!

Katrina: The Holiday Hustle Challenge is all about enjoying the holiday season while staying healthy and balanced. It’s about taking care of YOU. It features daily workouts, lifestyle challenges, and lots of delicious holiday recipes like cookies and cocktails! Join us for the Holiday Hustle here!

What’s the next challenge for the TIU community?

Karena: We have a new challenge coming up for the New Year. There are weekly workouts, daily classes in the studio, nutrition plans, lifestyle challenges, and so many tips and tricks to feel your absolute best in 2018. Be on the lookout for more details on our website soon!

You can find out more, get great tips and tricks and see the incredible transformations on their website and follow them on Instagram @toneitup as well as individually @karendawn and @katrinaascott.

Downtown’s Dogpound 2nd Annual Appreciation Party

Last night, the DogPound and Downtown hosted its second annual appreciation party. The instafamous gym, known for its celebrity clientele as well as their black-and-white theme and a dedication to “smash it”, has called 1 Renwick home for over a year.

The gym was filled with clients, family and close friends who joined the DogPound team to celebrate the special night. A night to thank everyone who make the DogPound happen and grow stronger, every. single. day.

“An overweight kid from Kansas is one of the hottest trainers in New York right now because of you guys. And three Dominican kids, that didn’t know what they were going to be, are trainers in New York, because people believed in them. I just want to say thank you and I’m super grateful for you,” said Brey “Beast” Pena, CSO and co-founder of the DogPound.

[slideshow_deploy id=’91903′]

For the night, the only sweat was caused by dancing and a packed house. Gone were post-workout shakes and recovery meals. Guests could however cool down with mixed cocktails by Moët Hennessey and recover with food catered by local Italian eatery, Adoro Lei.

DJ Tiff McFierce brought along a mean playlist of current hits and old school music, and had guests dancing until brought to a halt by a special surprise.

This night not only marked the DogPound having called 1 Renwick home for a year. It was also another key DogPound person’s birthday — Nigel Barker! The team brought out a cake in celebration as well as song and cheers.

To get the gym ready for early morning workouts, the party moved next door to Arlo SoHo for the afterparty.
