Recently taking the trip down from Toronto, Marla Joy is already singing her way to the top.
In her young career, Joy has shared the stage with likes of such musical icons as Prince and toured with Citizen Cope and Mary J Blige.
And while her career might be young, her talent has been developing for years. Marla has been classically trained on the piano since the age of four, and explains that in her teen years, “I turned to music, but not popular music at the time. I would listen to Aretha, Marvin, Stevie, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, The Stones, Zeppelin. I felt it was the only thing i could really connect to. The songs are undeniable, but it was the honesty, the emotion that they’d tell the story with, I could relate to the words…the feelings….everything…it was the raw soul.”
Her hard work and those same influences are undeniable in her own unique music, that takes those sounds in whole new direction.
She produced her latest work, EP, Perfectly Flawed in collaboration with Syience (a musical collective featuring Ne-Yo, Jay-Z, Wale, and J Cole). Marla’s amazing voice is apparent from the first track “Getting By.” Give your ears a treat and catch this rising star in in person, at Rockwood Music Hall next Friday night.
