Poisonous plants can be the root cause of seasonal pet illness

Many city dwellers spend time in the burbs with their pets during the Spring and Summer months and know to beware of danger lurking in amongst what appear to be perfectly lovely harmless flowers. But we might think the city is devoid of such dangers in which case we’d be dead wrong. Tulips and hyacinth bulbs, for example, are highly toxic and can make your pet very sick. Same goes for any part of a daffodil. And while not all lilies are toxic, several are in fact poisonous. Note that if a cat were to swallow even a tiny portion of a toxic lily, including the pollen, it could result in kidney failure. Crocuses and lily of the valley can also cause severe illness for your pet. As this is National Poison Prevention Week, toxic plants are a particularly timely topic. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) provides a complete list of poisonous plants, educational and consulting services along with a 24-hour veterinary diagnostic hotline which can be reached at 888-426-4435 or aspcapro.org/poison.
