Dressing your canine companion in the latest fashion trends may not be your number one priority, however, it is important to understand the importance of outerwear in protecting your pup from the elements. While dogs are to some extent kept warm by their fur, it is often not enough to protect them from the freezing temperatures frequenting New York City during the winter months. This is why some good winter wardrobe staples are oh so important for your precious pooch. Just like humans, every dog is different, and luckily there is an endless number of outwear choices each designed for a specific effect or weather condition. Here are our top five picks to keep your pup warm and dry in the winter.
1. Sweaters
Imagine surviving winter without a sweater! Sweaters are a great addition to your dog’s wardrobe as they are easy to wash, soft, comfortable and come in all different patterns, styles, and materials. Sweaters are great for a cold and clear day and for shorthaired, small, older or sensitive dogs as they help preserve body heat.
2.Coats
If your dog spends a lot of time outdoors in the winter, it might be time to invest in a canine coat. Even for longhaired or larger dogs with bodies better equipped to deal with cold temperatures, coats are beneficial as they protect their bellies which are without hair. Coats lined with wool and fleece are popular, with water-resistant material such as those used for human parkas great for those living in snowy areas.
3. Rain Jackets
Getting wet while in a cold climate can make spending time outside particularly uncomfortable for dogs, while creating significant mess back home. Rain jackets are made of water, resistant lightweight material, perfect for slipping on top of a sweater in the cold or on top of the dog’s fur coat if just needed for rain protection.
4. Boots
Depending on where you live, you may have additional concerns such as protecting your dog’s paws from slippery sidewalks and chemicals used to melt frozen ice. Furthermore, dog footwear can also help protect your carpet and flooring from those dreaded dirty paw prints. While many dogs don’t mind protecting their precious paws, there are some dogs that do oppose to footwear, so make sure you try before you buy.
5. Onesies
If you want your pooch kept warm from head to tail, look no further than the dog onesie. Perfect for a lazy day indoors, onesie’s will provide your pup with an extra layer of warmth on those chilly NYC winter days.
As humans, we know New York winter calls for maximum protection. As they say, do unto others, as you would like done to you. Don’t neglect your canine companion at this chilly time of year!
