Women’s Spring/Summer 2017 Trend Report

The time machine is back in effect for the Spring 2017 collections. The 80’s redux, from metallics to mini lengths and strong shoulders at Erdem, Kenzo, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Monse, Rodarte, and Saint Laurent. Taking us back to the “I want my MTV’ and Reagan era. Yes the 80’s are back!

“Flower power” also took a major role. Big, bold, graphic and colorful floral prints were apparent at Balenciaga, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci and more. Motorcross Mondrian-esque prints were also in effect. Speed racer inspired looks from Fendi, Proenza Schouler, to Sonia Rykiel and Versace alike. Fatigues are here to stay. Utilitarian is going on strong. Khakis and army greens at Balmain, Bottega Veneta, Celine, and Loewe, in ruffled greens, sheers and mini camo. Wanderlust looks in patch work, printed sweeping lengths, ruched and layered dresses took a play at Alberta Ferretti, Alexander McQueen, Chloe, Etro, Lanvin, Oscar De La Renta, Roberto Cavalli and Valentino.

Beyond the shadow of doubt, rose was the prominent color of Spring 2017. Rosy hues appeared on various runways. Strong feminine tones and silhouettes at Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Celine, Givenchy, Hermes, Jil Sander, Jason Wu, Ralph Lauren, Valentino and Vetements. As the majestic Diana Vreeland so gracefully once said: “Pink is the navy blue of India.”

Spring has Sprung at the Battery Conservancy

The Battery Conservancy

While open to the public every day of the year, the Battery Conservancy embraces spring with a lineup of exciting events and activities for New Yorkers of all ages. America’s largest perennial garden is the perfect oasis in Lower Manhattan to get away, and enjoy the warmer weather.

The Battery Conservancy

On May 8th at 8am, nature enthusiasts can join NYC Audubon, an organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of wild birds in the five boroughs, for a bird walk. Lead by experienced birder and naturalist Gabriel Willow, participants will have the opportunity to observe the diverse species that call the Battery their home. Those interested can RSVP here.

The Battery Conservancy Annual Gala

On June 8th, the Battery will host it’s 22nd Annual Gala. This year, the festivities will celebrate Hermès, as well as the cultural richness of Lower Manhattan. Cocktails will be served at 6:30pm, and dinner will commence at 7:30pm. Those interested in reserving a ticket for this enchanting night can contact Elizabeth Steeves.

The Battery Conservancy

Beginning April 13th, weekly walking tours through the soon-to-be lush gardens of the Battery  will be available. Participants will learn about the park’s history, visit important monuments and landmarks, and get a small break from the hustle and bustle of the Financial District. Not to be missed is the Seaglass Carousel, designed by the George Tsypin Opera Factory, for an otherworldly aquatic-inspired experience. Those interested can RSVP here.

The Battery Conservancy Volunteer Opportunities

Downtowners looking to give back to their community can join the Battery’s Horticulture Team. Volunteers help permanent staff maintain the beauty of the gardens by completing a minimum of 8, 2.5 hours shifts over the course of the calendar year on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Those plagued with a black thumb who still wish to help out can become a Battery Greeter, and help welcome visitors to the park. Information on both opportunities can be found here.

Urban Farming at the Battery Conservancy

The Battery also prides itself on being an organization that educates students on the importance and potential of urban farming. Groups from pre-K to 12th grade can be registered for self-guided or staff-guided field trips. Visits include everything from hands-on farming lessons, learning the history of NYC’s urban ecosystem, and tastings, if seasonably appropriate. More information on registration can be found the conservancy’s website.

Adventures In Art + exhibit now open through Apr. 29

ARTech: Adventures In Art + Technology is a free children’s exhibit produced by the Meatpacking Business Improvement District (BID). This is a brand-new initiative by the BID to foster an appreciation for STEAM disciplines. Despite being known primarily for food and nightlife, the Meatpacking District has witnessed the successful opening of new businesses all across the neighborhood that intersect technology with art. From Hermès and The Whitney, to Samsung and Lexus, these bold brands have drawn inspiration from seemingly opposite industries of art and technology to develop products and experiences that when combined, are perfectly in sync.

Capitalizing on this innovative thinking and to show the intersection of these two fields in daily life, the Meatpacking BID has partnered with the Children’s Museum of the Arts and the New York Hall of Science to host an indoor exhibit where children can explore and participate in STEAM workshops and activities. The exhibit opened on Mar. 1 and will remain open to the public through Apr. 29. More info on the exhibit can be found at www.meatpacking-district.com/events/artech-adventures-in-art-tech.

Olivia Bee Presents: Kids in Love

Pre-Kiss 2010

Have you ever wanted to return to your teenage years? Do you find it hard to recall the emotions you felt during that time?

Olivia Bee’s exhibition at the agnès b. Galerie Boutique in SoHo brings back those unique, intense, and infinite years by portraying young love. Bee has become one the most affluent young American photographers; her first ‘real’ job was with Converse. In fact, Bee attributes her success to Converse’s brand design director, Brandon Avery, saying, “I really owe my career to [Avery].” The 20-year-old started her career at 11, when she began publishing amateur photos on Flickr. At the tender age of 13, she became a photographer. Thenceforth, the talented Bee has fascinated many, and hence, was able to attract high-end clients that would make any aspiring photographer jealous: She has worked with The New York Times, VICE, Hermès, Roger Vivier, to name a few. In response to her instant success, Bee was invited to talk at the 2012 TEDxAmsterdamWomen — not the teen version — about following your dreams. In 2013, she gave her second TEDx talk in Athens. Even though she is still young, Olivia Bee is different from every other 20-year-old woman; she is a wise, mature, and enormously talented. Her latest work, and her first New York solo exhibition, ‘Kids in Love’, reminds us about what it felt like when we were teenagers. Bee says, “These pictures embody youth and freedom and love all in one place.” Isn’t that what being a teenager is really all about? The photos portray contrasting feelings: love, happiness, sadness, euphoria, and intensity.
