Gavin James to close his headlining tour at The Mercury Lounge

by | Nov 23, 2015 | Culture, Events, Music, Out On The Town

The winner of the Choice Music Irish Song Of The Year in 2013, Gavin James has experienced a whirlwind of a year. Having spent much of 2015 on the road alongside Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, Tori Kelly and Kodaline, the Dublin native was also one of American Express’ Artists In Residence, serving alongside Rae Sremmurd, Børns and Pia Mia. In addition, Gavin’s EP, Book Of Love, came out on Capitol Records.

I spoke to Gavin in advance of his November 23rd show at The Mercury Lounge. The last date on his first-ever U.S. headlining tour, Gavin was enthusiastic about his return to the area. Once that’s over with, he will reportedly be putting the final touches on a full-length album for Capitol. In the meantime, both gingers and non-gingers alike – hey, he said it without any prompting – can follow him at www.gavinjamesmusic.com.

Had you been to New York before playing your first gig here?

Gavin James: I’ve been to New York a few times! Absolutely love it there. Played with the lads from Kodaline on tour and with Tori Kelly. One of my favorite cities and there’s always lots of Irish people at the shows, which is lovely.

What do you remember most about your first-ever gig in New York City?

G: The first show I ever did in New York was in The Slipper Room in the East Village. It’s a burlesque type of place which made it interesting to play. Also it was my first experience with a crowd from New York! Loved it.

Your upcoming tour is the first time you’ve ever headlined a tour in North America. Are there any major differences between a headlining show of yours and a support slot gig?

G: Headlining over here has been crazy! I was nervous coming over for my first headline shows just because of the distance from Ireland, and I had no idea what crowds to expect. It has been amazing! From the first gig I’ve felt very much at home, the crowds have been great! And I’m chuffed to see how many people are coming along to the gigs!

For someone who hasn’t heard your music before, how would you describe it?

G: Kinda folky with a little bit of soul, sang by a ginger duuuude.

What is the best part of your job?

G: The best part of my job is meeting new people every day. I love that.

Given your overseas success, any chance we will ever hear you on the An Irishman Abroad podcast?

G: That would be amazing!

Who is the best Irish band that Americans may not know about?

G: I’m not sure how well known The Coronas are over here? But they are definitely a band to listen to from Ireland if you haven’t heard of them. Great bunch of lads, too.

When you have time away from your career, what do you like to do with yourself?

G:  Movies. All the movies. I looooove movies. And popcorn and all

Is there something that you wish more people knew about you?

G: Hmm, I’m kind of an open book to most people, so not too much to tell.

What is your preferred way of listening to music? Are you a fan of streaming?

G: I usually buy albums on iTunes and use Spotify most of the time. Spotify is pretty amazing for finding new artists with all the different playlists. So after I hear someone I like on there, I usually go to iTunes and get the album.

Finally, Gavin, any last words for the kids?

G: To all the gingers, I salute you! Hope to see some of you guys at a show! Non-gingers, too, of course. (laughs)
