New York Fashion Week 2022 Round Up

With New York Fashion Week coming to a close today, let’s take a look back at some of the collections that came to the runway this week.

Saturday night, Christian Siriano debuted sixty-seven new pieces in a collection aptly titled “Victorian Matrix.” Blues, blacks, and plenty of shimmering designs were on display. Siriano even created a piece for Instagram-famous Italian Greyhound @tikatheiggy! Model and TikTok sensation Coco Rocha closed the show wearing a hooded gray ensemble.

On Sunday morning, the runway saw a collection from Dennis Basso.

Basso said that the inspiration for this 2022 collection is “New York Moments,” and it featured a number of different furs, bright pink outerwear, and several off-the-shoulder gowns in every color from black to turquoise to florals. Basso says, “Fashion has always been very important to the people that love clothes, but more than making you look good, it is so important that clothes make you feel good.”

When asked about this season’s collection, designer Laurin Cabralissa says, “Especially as of late, people need something to lift them up emotionally and spiritually. Our clothes make people shine on the inside and outside. Life is too short to wear ugly clothes.”

Tory Burch’s ready-to-wear collection debuted Monday night twenty-five stories above the city at Hudson Commons.

On Instagram, Burch described her inspiration for the collection as “the uniquely expressive style of women on the streets of New York.” The collection featured vibrant, color-block dresses, new bags, and unique shoes.

On Valentine’s day, Coach and Stuart Vevers showed off a nostalgic collection designed to revisit some of Coach’s most-loved ideas. Upcycled leather, shearling coats, flannel, and crochet dresses all played a large role in bringing the idea to life. The show took place at Pier 36 and featured a minimalist, warm-toned, suburban set.

Tuesday saw a striking monochrome collection by Michael Kors accented by a performance by Miguel. Beginning with tan ensembles–outerwear, belts, bags, skirts, and pants–the show eventually ended with the antithesis: a glittering black gown worn by Gigi Hadid.

Not even human, LG AI personality Tilda created a collection for Fashion Week with designer YounHee Park. Using patterns designed by Tilda, Park launched this collection, the first of its kind, this week with intense outerwear and knit-wear.

Destination Tomorrow and Dominique Jackson Honored at Coach Signature Ball

On Sunday night, Coach honored model, activist, and FX Pose cast member Dominique Jackson at the Coach Signature Ball 2018. Jackson was honored for her work with Destination Tomorrow, a Bronx-based community organization. Destination Tomorrow works to empower those that identify as trans and gender non-conforming, as well as the LGBTQ youth and members of the House and Ballroom community. This important organization prepares these people for a better tomorrow

SLAY THE RUNWAY

The evening celebrated Ballroom Culture with two categories. The Fierce and Feminine Pride performance invited all genders to showcase their signature move and ‘let it all out’.  In The Walking Wonders, participants were invited to “walk like a model, serve like a legend, and slay it like an icon.”

Notables from places such as the House of Balenciaga, the House of Revlon, and the House of Ninja, sealed the deal on the Coach runway with their supermodel poses.

Coach Launches First Collection Under New Creative Director, Stuart Vevers

On Thursday, the luxury handbag and accessories brand Coach will unveil its Fall 2014 collection, which will be the first designs to feature the stamp of its new Executive Creative Director Stuart Vevers.

Vevers, who succeeded Reed Krakoff after a 16-year tenure, was tapped last June following a whirlwind of speculation (Marc Jacobs? Derek Lam? Philip Lim?) about who would fill the post. His name is relatively new to the American fashion circle, because he’s been in Spain for the past few years working for accessory brand Loewe.  We expect to hear it much more from this point forward.

Vevers is by no means a newcomer to the game, he’s just been behind the scenes. He has designed for Calvin Klein, Givenchy, Luella Bartley, Bottega Veneta and Louis Vuitton. In 2005 he was made Mulberry’s Creative Director and completely revitalized the brand, securing it a place among the “it” bags with his design, the “Emmy.” In 2006, he received the British Fashion Council’s Accessory Designer of the Year Award for his work at Mulberry.

In a 2013 interview with Dazed, Vevers talked about his start in the industry. He was 21, fresh out of school, and landed his first job at Calvin Klein. “I saw very quickly around me that people were doing bags as a second-best thing, whereas actually I liked them as a first-best thing – and I knew that that gave me an edge.”

Vevers’ collection for Coach is debuting at a pivotal moment in the company’s history. It reported sales slumps and falling stock prices in 2013, despite a new campaign that debuted in September. The new Executive Creative Director is taking the brand in a younger, edgier, more urban direction. His new line includes bags and shoes, as well as ready-to-wear, with an emphasis on outerwear.

Vevers may well be just what the 73-year-old company needs.
