Summer Street Style by Downtown

DSC_1872-min

Sophie Slotnick and I have both been on the lookout for candid street style and summer fashion trends exempt from any premeditation. So on behalf of Downtown, we took our skeptic eyes to the streets of Lower Manhattan to seek out our favorite fashionable strangers.

From Washington Square Park to Battery Park, from Union Square to SoHo, and from Flatiron to South Street Seaport, Sophie and I left no stone unturned. She did the talking, I did the photography, and together we’ve compiled the trendy, the daring and the elegant.

Christie Brinkley & Sailor Brinkley Cook talk to Downtown in the Hamptons

DSC_1684

This past Saturday I had the pleasure of attending the 5th Annual St. Barth Hamptons Gala, which celebrated the supermodel turned super-mogul, Christie Brinkley.

The festivities took place at the Bridgehampton Historical Museum with over 750 guests in attendance, including Christie Brinkley’s children, Sailor Brinkley-Cook and Jack Brinkley-Cook.

Between her exclusive Hair2Wear line, her Authentic Skincare products, and her soon-to-be launched Organic Prosecco brand, this mother of three exemplifies the strong, independent and hardworking woman worthy of idolization.

I had a chance to chat with this global icon for Downtown, and the first thing I wanted to know was, “What do you wish more people knew about Christie Brinkley?”

She responded by gushing with excitement over her new line of Organic prosecco, titled Bellissima:

“[I want people to know] that I have a great prosecco coming out in August! I’m really excited about this, because if I’m lucky, my prosecco, Bellissima, is going to be apart of people’s happiest moments. They’ll reach for my Bellissima to toast baby’s being born, kids graduating from college, or just ‘hey, it’s Friday night and a friend’s coming over!’ It’s those good times, those happy times, those beautiful moments that we’ll [now] get to share with them in our own way and that’s very exciting to me. And we’re at a great price point too: $19.99! I mean, that’s reason to pop the cork and celebrate!”

This line of prosecco is unparalleled to anything you may have in your liquor cabinet. Why, you ask? The entire line is completely organic and vegan, made from all naturally-grown grapes found in Italy’s Treviso-Veneto region. Not to forget, the blue one is 100% sugar-free!

“I feel very, very proud of that. Because going organic is really good for our bodies and our planet,” Christie added.

Eating healthy has been a booming trend for years now, but finally thanks to Christie Brinkley, we have an outlet to drink healthy as well. This model and actress is not one to just simply stick her name on a product with complete disregard for its quality or affectivity. Rather, she works with sincerity to ensure we receive her promised outcome.

This is evident through the Christie Brinkley Authentic Skincare Line:b863ca76-45c6-4aa8-95be-49042b11eed3 “I love the fact that my skincare is giving women the results that they’re looking for. And I hear all day long women say to me ‘Christie, thank you so much!’ I was really, really, really strict about it. Until I felt like we were giving women true results, I kept saying, ‘No, no, not good enough. I want more, more, more.’ And women are literally seeing the age fall off their face and they’re feeling better and more confident. That makes me really happy.”

Are you still skeptical? I’ll tell you why I’m not. I approached Christie’s daughter Sailor for a little impromptu Q&A, and from that I was able to glean a little more insight into just how genuine Christie and her products are.DSC_1745 Sailor welcomed the unscheduled interview with grace and excitement. She was extremely candid and sincere. We chatted briefly about her moms line of prosecco, and she too thought the organic and zero-sugar ideas were genius, as it allows people to go out and enjoy their night without waking up with dietary guilt the next morning.

However, Sailor’s authenticity fully shined through when I asked the aspiring model: “What is the best advice your mom has given you about the modeling industry?”

unspecified-2

To which Sailor answered: “To be you. I’ve been told by photographers [and make-up and hair artists] that they like how I make conversation with them and treat them like people. And that’s what my mom did that got her big in the industry. She treated everyone as a human and as an equal and just made working fun. And that’s what I aspire to do. I aspire to have a personality in the business.”

I asked Christie the same question. As her worldwide fame began to skyrocket in the late 1970s, Christie recalls the first time she started to meet major celebrity figures from the industry. “I remember meeting every celebrity I’ve ever met when I was first coming to New York City. [And] it’s a story that I’ll tell, so I want everybody that I meet to have a nice story. So that’s what I tell my kids. I say always be polite [and] make sure they have a nice story about them.”

After speaking with Sailor, the strong values her mother has instilled in her were clear. And those values have been recapitulated in all of the Brinkley products.

Busting The Myth: What Millennials Really Think About Online Shopping

Online shopping website on laptop screen with female hands typing
technofaq.org

Online purchasing has pushed its way into our lives with a fiery resilience, making in-store shopping a thing of the past.

I first noticed the recent increase of this new trend when all of the stores in my town started posting “going out of Business” signs. My beloved Lululemon. My sweet, sweet Best Buy. Where will I get overpriced athletic spandex and indestructible phone cases with that instant gratification I so desire?

When I asked the store clerks why they were going out of business after so many years of conspicuous success, he merely replied, “People don’t come in anymore. They shop online.”

“HOW COULD THIS BE?” I internally wondered with the kind of shock and disturbance reserved only for roller coasters and scary movies.

Does no one else have a hunger for that instant gratification I previously spoke of? Isn’t that what our “millennial” generation is so satirically known for?

And aside from all the waiting we have to do. THE UNBEARABLE WAITING, I SAY. What if after the product arrives we don’t like it?

So now after waiting 5-7 business days, you’ve received your product, you are disappointed with it, and NOW you must pack it up and go through the unnecessary exacerbation of sending it back. THE MADNESS!

I am only moderately ashamed to admit that on the rare occasion I have to mail a package or letter, I resort to Google to remind me how. We’ve all been there, right? (Say yes.)

Am I wrong in thinking that it is just easier to simply drive to the store, try it on or test it out, and then deem the product purchasable or not? No harm, no foul.

So I took to the polls, not Donald vs. Hillary, but instead “online vs. in-store.”

And here is what the millennials had to say:Screen Shot 2016-07-21 at 2.15.31 PMThanks to the one non-millennial who pitched in!

Out of those 88 people I surveyed, 60% prefer in-store shopping.

Screen Shot 2016-07-21 at 2.15.51 PMThis is likely because almost 95% of them worry that the look of their products will not measure up to their expectations.

Screen Shot 2016-07-21 at 2.16.03 PMAnd because 83% of those surveyed agree that it is necessary to test and try the product prior to purchasing.

Screen Shot 2016-07-21 at 2.16.31 PMNot to mention over 66% are like me and find it difficult to send back products due to dissatisfaction.

Screen Shot 2016-07-21 at 2.16.40 PMThere you have it folks! Let’s bring back the experience of in store shopping and get off the Web for a little while.

HALO TOP Ice Cream Is Better Than We Could Have Ever Imagined

all_flavors-4080

I Scream You Scream We All Scream for Ice Cream…but without the calories?

Your prayers have been answered by the one with a Halo.

It’s true, the creators of Halo Top have just uncovered the biggest anomaly in food history.

Foodie or not, most of us have heard about the new trend of low cal ice creams hitting the market. The biggest battle being Halo Top versus Arctic Zero. Though after trying both, I have to say there is really no competition.

If I may be so candid to say, Arctic Zero tasted like dirty snow.

Where as our Downtown team was blown away by all the sweet delicious flavor that was packed into 240 calories of Halo Top. That’s right people, 240 calories. Not for a quarter of the pint or even half. FOR THE WHOLE DAMN THING. Because let’s be honest with ourselves… we’re not, not going to eat the entire thing.

Plus nearly 50% of your Daily Value of protein. It begs the question: Why doesn’t everyone just do this? static1.squarespacePrior to our little taste testing I was skeptical. Low calorie, low fat, low sugar, high protein AND gluten-free. Unless the ice cream was flavored with grilled chicken and asparagus there is no way it could be this healthy, right?

Wrong.

You guys, I’m telling you, it tastes like REAL ice cream. The chocolate is chocolate-y. The vanilla is vanilla-y. It’s rich. It’s creamy. It’s just plain good.

If you’re on your way to the grocery store now, here are my personal recommendations:

“Birthday Cake” comes in as my number one favorite. Reluctant to publicly admit that I ate the whole thing in one sitting.

However, if you’re a fellow chocotectic like myself: both the plain “Chocolate” and the “Chocolate Mocha Chip” satisfy that dark sweet tooth.

And lastly, I have never been attracted to citrus flavors because I prefer my dessert to not taste like a Glade scented candle… but…the “Lemon Cake” pint was exceptionally mouthwatering. static1.squarespace

They said it best “SAVE THE BOWL, you’re going to want the whole pint.”

Cookie DŌ NYC has Reinvented the Dessert Game

WARNING: THE FOLLOWING CONTENT MAY RESULT IN A SERIOUS SWEET TOOTH

During my extensive search to unearth delicious summer treats that were whipped with originality, rolled with creativity and sprinkled with a little panache, I found myself eye-to-eye with Cookie DŌ NYC.

CookieDOnyc_promoI remember being a child making cookies with my parents and sneaking the raw dough under the table until my mom would catch me and yell out, “That’s how you get salmonella-poisoning young lady!”

Thankfully, I matured and stopped sneaking raw dough years ago.

Well, except for that time last month when I annihilated those uncooked sugar cookies with the reindeers on them. And also the time after that with those ones with the peanut butter chips. Oh and also…what was I saying again?

I didn’t know what salmonella meant and clearly still don’t. My mom also probably never referred to me as “young lady,” but you get the idea.

Thanks to Kristen Tomlan, founder of DŌ, we can eat all the raw cookies we desire!nlgDŌ, Cookie Dough Confections is a line of edible cookie dough based treats made with the highest quality ingredients and zero preservatives. With over 20 handcrafted flavors, the company’s offerings range from s’mores to confetti to oatmeal and everything in between. Not to mention all of the gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options for those DŌ lovers out there with dietary restrictions.

CookieDOnyc_hero circles

Kristen, a fellow gluten-intolerant foodie, describes her love for baking as a “therapy of sorts” where she can hash out the stresses of everyday into creating new flavors and recipes to share.

The idea for DŌ sparked during a girls weekend in Philadelphia. Thanks to a stage 5 case of sugar cravings, the ladies raced for a frozen tub of raw cookie dough. Followed by some banter, “we passed around the tub, loving every bite and laughing about the lack of cookie dough designed solely for eating in its pure form. From there, DŌ was born.”

The coolest part about DŌ lies in its versatility. Not only can you customize your edible dough and enjoy it straight out of the carton, with the cute little wooden spoons they give you as an added #bonus. But you can also bake the dough into cookies or cakes, use it for ice cream sandwiches, and even roll them up and dip them into melted chocolate for a little DŌ truffle action.

After a little taste testing of our own, the Downtown team is here to reveal our personal favorite:

Drum roll please…

“Nuts for Nuts:” a silky smooth combination of Peanut Butter + Reese’s Cups + Reese’s Pieces. See below for the drool-worthy photo…

Be sure to check out their three Seasonal Favorite flavors for this summer:

“Funfetti Dunkadoo”

“Cake Batter”Circle_007Following them on Snapchat was also probably the best life choice I’ve made in months: @cookiedonyc.
