Cosmetics With A Cruelty-Free Ethos!

crueltyfree2

Women, men and everyone in between can all concur that wearing makeup makes you feel good. But what about feeling good in an ethical sense?

While Sephora’s and Ulta’s have shelves stock tall of our favorite primers, mascara, highlighters- and the list goes on- not all of them partake in a cruelty-free ethos.

Being a cruelty-free makeup brand means ingredients and products aren’t tested on animals, rather, they test on human cells and tissue or use advanced computer technology to ensure product safety. Thus allowing Snow White to rest easy knowing her forest gang is out of harms way.

Well, how can you tell? The packaging of any product should have a set of bunny ears or a leaping bunny, usually located on the back. This means the brand is approved by either PETA or Leaping Bunny; both organizations are the gold standards in cruelty free policing. However, some independent brands have alternate certification methods.

But just to be sure, a simple Google search or a look into the brands website should disclose if they don’t test on animals.

To make cruelty free cosmetics convenient, we’ve compiled a list of high and lower end brands that do not test on animals, so if you’re considering on making the switch- here’re the brands that go the extra mile to protect our furry friends. (This list isn’t definitive; there a plethoric amount of cosmetics that are also cruelty free that I may have missed. I’ve listed the most popular.)

High end:

  • NARS
  • Illamasqua
  • Hourglass
  • Too Faced
  • Urban Decay
  • Tarte
  • Bite
  • Bare Minerals
  • Cover FX
  • Josie Maran
  • Becca
  • Cargo
  • IT cosmetics
  • Korres
  • Drunk Elephant
  • Lorac
  • BH Cosmetics
  • Hourglass
  • Kat Von D Beauty

Drugstore:

  • E.L.F.

Beauty Brands We Love: Drunk Elephant Skin Care

As the adage goes, ‘If you want something done right, do it yourself.’ The sentiment became a reality for Tiffany Masterson when venturing into the world of skincare. Founder of skincare line, Drunk Elephant, Masterson developed her products to embody a non toxic ethos, creating a product that she had yet to find on the market.

Masterson stated, “We give our skin way too much credit for being ‘sensitive’ and ‘easily irritated’.  Could it be that it’s the ingredients found in most skin care products are causing these issues and it’s not our skin after-all?  I think we need to focus a bit more on what a product is going to do for us and how it’s going to do it…and what each ingredient is there for.”

Drunk Elephant is a ‘clinical meets natural’ concept she developed after years of searching for the right product. Opposed to others on the market filled with sulfates, parabens, dyes, and harsh fragrances. Masterson’s goal was to create a line that was clinically effective, low-hazard and non irritating. Her role in the process is very active; ideas blossom into development, as Masterson hands picks ingredients and collaborates with her chemist until product completion.

Gauging whether her line was open to expansion, Masterson expressed, “Hair care is a possibility.  I’d love to do that because I think our breakouts on the face, back and chest can oftentimes be attributed to ingredients in our shampoo and conditioner.”

Besides retailing online, the products can be found downtown, in Kirna Zabete; a luxury, designer retail shop. Drunk Elephant is the only skincare brand they carry in store.

Sarah Easley, co-founder of Kirna Zabete, says Drunk Elephant is the sole skin care brand residing in her store because the products are great quality, “Once I starting using the line, especially the juju bar and the marula facial oil, I started really seeing results!”

Here are some of our faves:

de1

T.L.C Framboo Glycolic Night Serum ($90)

What it does: Lifts away impurities such as dead skin, in support of natural collagen. Ingredients work to chemically exfoliate and minimize the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, excess oiliness, and hyper pigmentation.

de2 de3

JuJu and Pekee Bar: ($28, each)

What it does: Besides having a pleasant, earthy scent, the JuJu bar cleanses, exfoliates and heels, removing stubborn dirt. The Pekee bar tones and moisturizes with Ph balanced base, so your skin doesn’t dry out.

de4

Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil ($72)

What it does: Super absorbing oil that protects against environmental stressors and free radicals.

Tuesday Tip: Salvage Your Feet From Open-Toe Season

The concrete jungle wasn’t exactly designed with accommodations for open toed sandals. We’ve traded our flip flops for ankle boots, but we can’t help but notice our feet are facing a slight repercussion. They’re dry, cracked, ashen, and we need to salvage our feet before winter’s unforgiving weather invades.

Our Tuesday tip for sandal salvation is tough enough to terminate the sandpaper symphony of your heels and bedsheets. But first, we need to exfoliate. Moisturizing renders futile is you haven’t removed the rough outer layer of dead skin.

amopeeAmope Pedi Perfect (Extra Coarse) $39.99

The perfect exfoliator; Amope Pedi Perfect-  the extra coarse, diamond encrusted  rotating head rolls over problem areas and makes a huge difference after initial use.     The sharp diamond edges get a closer exfoliation than traditional ‘cheese-grater’ products and it genuinely works. Feet’ll feel 100% softer after removing the tough outer layer. If you’re looking for the perfect stocking stuffer for someone battling winters harsh weather, this is it.
keeff

O’Keefe’s Healthy Feet Cream ($5.29)

After exfoliation, a foot-oriented moisturizer for hydration is a must. Our pick: O’Keefe’s Healthy Feet cream, it has a high concentration of glycerin, which retains moisture. A consistent application at night with socks to lock in moisture is imperative. The most stubborn of cracks are removed, guaranteed.

While the Amope Pedi Perfect should be used only when feet are no longer salvageable by your ever common pumice stone, you can exfoliate the thin layer of dead skin accumulation by using a homemade sugar scrub. All you need are 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 tablespoon of honey, and 1/2 cup of sugar. The sugar works to remove the dead skin, olive oil to add a burst of hydration and honey to soothe and soften, simultaneously.

If you neglect to take care of your own feet or just can’t manage the upkeep – abide by the wisdom of Tom Haverford and Donna Meagle, “Treat Yo’self!” Get a pedicure! Pedicure’s aren’t just about painting your toes with the seasons hottest color, pedicurists are trained to exfoliate and maintain a soft foot by bathing it in epsom salts.

Last, keep up with your daily moisturizer, we know that keeping up with your feet is the last thing you remember when applying lotion, but consistency is key for soft feet.

coosos

In our newly released fall 2015 issue, we featured CosBar; a luxury cosmetics shop with a twist; cosmetics are served with a side of compassion.

The new downtown hangout is taking up residency at Brookfield Place, and after its initial installation among the sea of lavish brand names, the beauty shop is having an official grand opening with founder, Lily Garfield, making a debut, on October 16th.

CosBar at Brookfield Place marks the brands 14th location, and first ever in New York. AND, you can attend the grand opening for the grandest city on earth. By rsvping on the CosBar website, you’ll be able to mingle, meet the owner and learn about her compassionate ethos. Garfield’s incentive to open shop was solely for customer satisfaction, telling us at Downtown Magazine, “We promote the customer, not the brand.”

The festivity will include champagne, mini-facials, makeup applications, beauty demos and a gift with each purchase. Plus, 10% of all in-store sales will be donated to Cancer and Careers.

beGlammed Offers Round The Clock Beauty Amenities

beglammed2

Beauty apps have changed the way we indulge in our beauty consumption habits. Whether you’re a natural homebody, a busy-bee on the go, or at work for the better half of your day, beauty services can accommodate to the most frenetic of schedules.

beGlammed; a beauty service that offers hair styling and cosmetic services around the clock. That’s right, 24 hours of the day – (granted, not everyone will utilize the service at 3 a.m., but it’s nice to know we have the option.)

How beGlammed works: After registering for the app, you may select on a specific service; hair or makeup. The app categorizes each service in three tiers with ascending prices for each service: Pretty, Beautiful, and Glamorous. The cost determines which stylist you’ll be paired with; as the most seasoned stylists are utilized for the Glamorous tier; ideal for red carpets or weddings.

Though, regardless of tier, every stylist assuredly has the appropriate amount of training, guaranteeing a perfect blowout, downdo, or updo each time. Moreover, stylists are also vetted based on congeniality and customer service, (the price range varies from $40-$200.)

App creator, Maile Pacheco, expressed beGlammed stylists are all inclusive, “We have stylists for all hair types and every ethnicity. Whether it’s Asian hair or African American hair; our stylists are equipped to cater all of our clients.”

The products used to style clients must fulfill one requirement: being top quality. Besides a partnership with R+Co hair products, since the app’s initial launch May 2014, beGlammed works with trusted brands such as MAC cosmetics, Makeup Forever, Kevin Murphy, Hourglass cosmetics and others.

As for the glam locale, the possibilities are plenty, get styled at home or the office. Pacheco even informed us that beGlammed even secured a few gym locations, expanding their availability for the most intensive schedules.

Although operation isn’t feasible in every state, stylists are based in major metropolitan areas, with an approximating total of 550 stylists cross-country. Their accessibility is what gives the app their contrastive edge. Pacheco stated, “We’re in more cities than any other [beauty] app. Making us more easily accessible for our clients who travel often.”

As for flexibility, the app knows no barriers, Pacheco stated, “We’ve even had services requested in a car ride during New York Fashion Week. One of our clients picked up her stylist on the street corner, she hopped in the car, and touched her [makeup] up on the way over. We’re literally mobile and will go anywhere.”

The Uber of beauty was created by Maile Pacheco, whose repertoire spans a lengthy career oriented around the beauty and fashion industry. The incentive to create the app cultivated as an organic process, Pacheco stated, “Being a veteran in the industry, and a makeup artist myself, I know exactly what would be more convenient for me, as well as my clients.”

Pacheco worked as a makeup artist for years before transitioning to the corporate side of the beauty industry, “I had a little bit of both, it was the perfect marriage of art and commerce. I had my outlet of doing makeup, but I also had the business and marketing experience as well.”

Thinking about downloading the beGlammed app? Plan in advance because the busiest time of the year for the stylists is the holiday season, naturally. You can even book discounted group packages; making the innovative service a no-brainer for your upcoming holiday parties. Book early to beGlammed 😉
