Due to popular demand, Immersive Van Gogh at Pier 36 on Vesey Street, has been extended through April 2022.

It was seen by 800,000 visitors during its New York City premiere in the summer of 2021, before closing to make way for previously scheduled events at Pier 36. More than 3.5 million tickets have been sold to Immersive Van Gogh since its North American premiere in July 2020, making it one of the most popular attractions in North America.

Immersive Van Gogh invites audiences to “step inside” the iconic works of Van Gogh, evoking his highly emotional and chaotic inner consciousness through art, light, music, movement and imagination. The gallery space offers patrons more than 500,000 cubic feet of animated projections. Immersive Van Gogh was designed by Creator Massimiliano Siccardi, with original, mood-setting music, both original and curated, by Italian multimedia Composer Luca Longobardi, who provided a score that combines experimental electronic music with pure, ethereal and melodic orchestral pieces. Vittorio Guidotti is the Art Director.

Creative Director David Korins, award-winning designer of Broadway hits including Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen, created a custom design to fit the architecture of the exhibition’s New York home, adding innovative design elements to the Pier 36 experience.

7 World Trade Center Welcomes New Frank Stella Installation

Silverstein Properties has announced the installation of a new sculpture – Jasper’s Split Star by legendary artist Frank Stella – in the Silverstein Family Park at 7 World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan.

Larry Silverstein, Chairman of Silverstein Properties, acquired the artwork to display in the center of the park’s fountain, a location that was previously occupied by Jeff Koons’ Balloon Flower (Red). Mr. Koons’ sculpture was on loan from the artist since 7 WTC opened in May 2006 until late 2018.

One of the most influential American artists of the 20th century, Frank Stella has explored the formal imperatives of art, including line, color, and form. Mr. Stella has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the National Medal of Arts, which was bestowed on him by President Obama in 2009. Mr. Stella lives and works in New York City, and his work can be found in prestigious collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Tate Gallery, London.

Mr. Silverstein had previously purchased two paintings by Frank Stella in the late 1990s that he displayed in the lobby of the original Seven World Trade Center. Laestrygonia I and Telepilus Laestrygonia II were both destroyed on 9/11.

“Art has always played a big role in my personal and professional life,” said Mr. Silverstein. “It adds an exciting dimension to our lives and everything we do. It expands our thinking and offers a glimpse into the creative minds of the artists. I am thrilled to bring this stunning piece by Frank Stella to the World Trade Center so that Downtown’s workers, residents and visitors can enjoy it.”

Jasper’s Split Star was inspired by a painting Mr. Stella made in 1962, Jasper’s Dilemma, itself a tribute to his contemporary Jasper Johns. Six of the star’s sides are solid aluminum, and six are open and spray-painted pale shades of blue, purple and grey. Mr. Stella created the 202” x 257” x 249” sculpture in 2017. Most recently, Jasper’s Split Star was included in an exhibition of 25 works by the artist at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Connecticut, from September 2020 to September 2021.

Frank Stella commented: “Jasper Johns often played a grey-scale against an obvious chromatic scale of red, orange, yellow, green and blue. For the most part, it was on a two-dimensional surface. It was hard not to think of transposing that kind of dynamic into three dimensions. So the split star came rather naturally into being as a play of Jasper’s early paintings.”

Silverstein Properties has supported art and artists in its office buildings for over 30 years, ensuring they remain an integral part of the fabric of Downtown Manhattan.

When Larry Silverstein opened the original Seven WTC in 1987, Larry and his wife Klara spent several years filling the lobby with contemporary art. Installations included The Third Circle by Al Held, a Roy Lichtenstein entablature, Cloud by Louise Nevelson, Crusading Euphoria by Ross Bleckner, the two large paintings by Frank Stella, and others.

When the company opened the new 7 WTC in 2006, Silverstein collaborated with Jamie Carpenter and architect David Childs on the building’s stainless steel façade, as well as on the lobby art installation, For 7 World Trade, by Jenny Holzer. The lobby also features two metal sculptures, Easter Monday and Equilateral Quivering Tower, by Kenneth Snelson; two large paintings, Element No. 1 and Element No. 31, by Ran Ortner; as well as work by Richard Jolley, Nicole Chensey, Andrew Kuo, Greg Bogin, Regina Sculley and Scott Reeder. The other World Trade Center buildings feature large art installations including Joystick by James Rosenquist at 3 WTC, and Sky Memory by Kozo Nishino at 4 WTC, among others.

Last year, Larry Silverstein’s grandson Cory and his friend Josh Pulman launched Silver Arts Projects, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting emerging artists. Each year, 25 young artists work out of a studio on the 28th floor of 4 WTC. The residency space is dedicated to art making, providing artists with customized studios and the tools, platform, and resources to expand their practices and further their careers. The floor also features community spaces for study and dialogue, and allows artists to collaborate while enjoying sweeping, 360-degree views of the New York City skyline.

Brookfield Place Luminaries

This installation and holiday tradition features a canopy of colorful lights emanating from hundreds of suspended lanterns. Luminaries was created by the LAB at Rockwell Group for Brookfield Place, inspired by the season’s traditions of sharing, giving, and community.

Touchless wishing stations located on the ground allow visitors to send a motion-activated ‘wish’ into the canopy of lanterns above, prompting a magical display of lights and colors. For each wish made and each interaction with Luminaries, Brookfield Place will donate $1 up to $25,000 to City Harvest, New York City’s largest food rescue organization.

This year, Luminaries debuts Maestro, a new interactive experience that will enable guests to conduct their own symphony. Maestro leverages skeletal tracking technology which allows you to show off your creativity as your own unique light show is displayed in unison with holiday music. The kiosk is an organic form, inspired by an abstraction of global instruments from harps to guitars, and is manufactured by Timbur and made of CNC-milled plywood.

An ASL Performance for Regina Comet

“A Commerical Jingle for Reginia Comet” is *running* an ASL-interpreted performance of their show on November 20th at 3pm. The performance is part of a partnership with Broadway SIGNs! and show producer Jo-Ann Dean. Regina Comet is the story of two nobodies dreaming of writing one hit song for everybody…and a diva. It stars Alex Wyse (Spring Awakening, Waitress) and Ben Fankhauser (Newsies) as two struggling songwriters and Bryonha Marie Parham (Prince of Broadway) as the eponymous Regina Comet. Wyse and Fankhauser also wrote and composed the book for the show. Tickets are available at reginacomet.com.

Since their opening in September, Regina Comet has drawn audiences, laughs, and rave reviews, including from this website. The show follows two struggling songwriters, so anonymous that they go unnamed in the show and are billed as “Man 2” and “Other Man,” who get the chance of a lifetime when over-the-hill diva Regina Comet hires them to write a new song to advertise her new fragrance, “Relevance.” The results are creative, endearing, and hilarious.

The November 20th ASL-interpreted show also marks one of the last performances of the show at the DR2 theatre.

So hop online now and check out A Commercial Jingle for Regina Comet, running through November 21st, 2021.

Sapien Tribe Celebrates Network, Sells NFTS for Charity, at Cipriani 25

Sapien founders Rob Giometti and Ankit Bhatia at launch party at Cipriani 25.

Sapien, a new tokenized social network created by Berkeley students Ankit Bhatia and Rob Giometti in 2016, recently launched their digital network, at a large downtown bash at Cipriani 25.

Dubbed “The Sapien Nation Tribe,” they are a tokenized social network now 100,000 + plus strong, built on decentralization and privacy, utilizing ethereum blockchain technology, that protects members’ intellectual property, as well as rewards and inspires its members to create digital content. In their terms, they are “first sovereign digital nation.”

“It’s about love, it’s about making [members] own their decisions, and to feel fundamentally empowered,” said Ankit Bhatia at the event. “It’s about protecting freedom of speech.”

Starring front and center at the event was a 7 foot statue of Harambe the Gorilla, who in late October had been in the news, for facing the Charging Bull on Bowling Green, as a symbolic gesture of how “out of touch Wall Street has become with the needs of the everyday people,” according to their site.  Harambe had also recently traveled to California, where he stood opposite the corporate offices of Facebook, now known as Meta. Harambe is modeled after the gorilla was killed at the Cincinnati Zoo in 2016.

Sales from NFTs (non-fungible tokens) at the event created by Sapien Tribe artists were donated to several charities, including the Sanneh Foundation, Harambee Foundation, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, and Bye Bye Plastic.

For more information on Sapien, visit sapien.network. They can also be found on Twitter and Discord.
