In the heart of Tribeca, Port Sa’id NYC isn’t just another restaurant, it’s a meeting place for cultures, flavors, and people from all walks of life. At the helm is Chef Victor Gothelf, a young, dynamic Israeli-American whose journey from dishwasher to executive chef is as inspiring as the bold dishes he serves.
I was recently invited to a special evening introducing us to Port Sa’id, and it was nothing short of fantastic, like walking into one of my favorite discos. Great music spun from vinyl, a live DJ, dancers, incredible food, and a vibrant crowd from all over the world filled the room.
It was even more special because I brought one of my dearest friends, and her daughter Saar, both from Israel. I’ve known Saar and her family since she was just a wee girl living here in NYC, and seeing her now, a grown woman, was pure joy. Having the honor of inviting Saar and her mom Gilat to share this experience at such a wonderful new restaurant made the night unforgettable. Port Sa’id NYC is a go-to place, it will make you happy.

A Culinary Journey Born from Persistence
Gothelf’s story starts at just 12 years old, working as a dishwasher to help support his family. He fought his way into kitchen roles, learning alongside seasoned cooks. But the brutal reality of the industry, long hours, financial struggles, and missed family milestones, almost pushed him away from food for good.
That changed when a Facebook post led to a job with Eyal Shani, one of Israel’s most celebrated chefs. “Eyal trusted me with full creative freedom,” Gothelf, says. “Every dish on the menu is mine, inspired by his artistry, but with my own touch. He’s an incredible mentor.”

Port Sa’id: A Modern Gathering Place
The name Port Sa’id is a nod to the historic Egyptian port city, a place where trade routes brought together people from across the globe. For Gothelf, that symbolism runs deep.
“Ports have always been about connection, regardless of gender, age, religion, or politics,” he says. “That’s exactly what we’re building here. In these complicated times, especially for Israelis and Jewish people, I’m proud that our dining room welcomes everyone, including many Muslim and Arab guests. Food can unite in ways politics never will.”

An Israeli Restaurant with a Global Welcome
The restaurant’s vibrant atmosphere reflects the diverse Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavors on the menu. Think fresh herbs, bold spices, and seasonal produce, all designed to be shared.

And while the food is upscale, the price point is refreshingly accessible. “We want Port Sa’id NYC to be for everyone, whether you’re here for a special birthday or just grabbing dinner three nights a week,” Gothelf, says. “Rich, poor, it doesn’t matter. It’s a home for everybody.”

The Heart of Tribeca Dining
For locals, Port Sa’id NYC offers more than a great meal, it’s a reminder that in one of the world’s busiest cities, there’s still room for connection. For travelers, it’s a taste of Middle Eastern warmth right in the heart of Tribeca.
As for Chef Gothelf’s message to the city:
“We’re here for everyone, no matter what. Come for the food, stay for the connection.”
