58 WAYS TO SUPPORT LOWER MANHATTAN BUSINESSES THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Maybe this year is the year to accept that the 2020 Holiday season will be different.

It’s not that long ago that we made it through the toughest two seasons to spend quarantined, spring, and summer. Is this not the time of the year, that most of us long for? Shedding our heavy winter clothes, and shaking off those dreary blues, not to mention those few extra pounds we put on over the long winter months, snuggled up with cookies, hot cocoa, and scrumptious Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding?

Wait… that was me I was talking about.

Personally, I think we need to be a little less worried about jumping on a plane to see Grandma and Grandpa, or jetting off to that island paradise just so you can jump in the beautiful piercing blue ocean in that new bikini, or parasail your way over the long white sandy beaches. It’s so overrated!

What’s not overrated is staying the course, thinking about others, do your part, from populating your travel miles with or picking up on your travels the worst virus in our lifetime.

Downtown Alliance compiled 58 Ways to Not Leave Lower Manhattan.

Holidays are a little different this year, with many people forgoing big family celebrations in favor of smaller, home-based events. All the more reason, then, to make your homebound holiday even more special.

If you’re sticking around Lower Manhattan, we’ve rounded up some great spots in the neighborhood for seasonal cheer. Here, we’ve included some tasty eateries, eclectic shops, and other local highlights. Note that most of these establishments have been hit hard during the pandemic and could use some extra help these days, so you’ll be giving back as much as you’re getting. Happy holidays!

A CITY ON PAWS

SINCE MARCH, it has been raining cats and dogs at NYC’s Animal Haven Shelter. The tidal wave of COVID-19 cases that hit New York also flooded their system with abandoned or orphaned pets. To right their ship, Animal Haven launched its “Emergency Action Fund,” a campaign to ensure that they could respond to the flood of rescues brought to their attention.

Many pet owners have lost their lives to the virus. Other owners had to leave their homes, relocating to temporary homes where their animal friends weren’t welcome. On one occasion, a Manhattan senior center was forced to move more than 300 residents into private hotel rooms—no pets allowed. Animal Haven came to the rescue, sheltering all of the abandoned pets until their owners could relocate to a place where their furred and feathered friends were welcome.

I have been a lucky puppy. I still have my home, my mom, and my Downtown Magazine family. Sadly, many more lost their owners forever and need new families and new homes. Below are some of COVID’s four-legged refugees. Some have found a home already, but many have not.

If you have room in your home and in your heart to adopt a new friend, there are always pets available at Animal Haven. Or you can donate to the wonderful people who find and care for these pets. Visit animalhaven.org/#action or find them on Venmo @AnimalHaven.

A CITY ON PAWS
THIMBLE, LAB MIX, 8 YEARS OLD

I have been a good boy all my life. I am obedient and well-mannered, and given all the love a dog could want. Now my best friend is gone, and I need love more than ever. Do you have room in your home for one more?

A CITY ON PAWS
SKY, JACK RUSSELL MIX, 4 YEARS OLD

When my pawrent had to leave their senior center, I was terrified. They were going to a new place where they would be safe, but I wasn’t allowed to join. Animal Haven took me in, along with dozens of other pets, while we waited for our pawrents to return for us. I already have my happy ending: I was returned to my owner, and we’re both safe and well.

A CITY ON PAWS
WINTER, DOMESTIC SHORT HAIR CAT, 8 YEARS OLD

Animal Haven saved my nine lives. When my guardian passed away at 82, I had nowhere else to go. A neighbor called Animal Haven and they came to get me. I was so scared–probably because of all of the PPE–but they brought me back with them safely. I am still getting over the fright of being alone, but I think I am ready to find a new family to love.

A CITY ON PAWS
SYDNEY, TERRIER MIX, 12 YEARS OLD

I once was lost, but now I’m found. I spent some serious time on the street, abandoned by my previous owner. I got rescued when a good Samaritan found me in a park and brought me to Animal Haven. I am blind and deaf, but I still have a lot of love to give to a family who wants me.

A CITY ON PAWS
ROSCOE, MASTIFF MIX, 10 YEARS OLD

I am a fortunate dog. After my owner passed away from COVID, I was lost. Literally. I ended up in the city shelter before being rescued by Animal Haven. Will you help me find a new home and a family to love me?

A CITY ON PAWS
CHOCO CHIHUAHUA, 12 YEARS OLD

I was blessed with a big family: a mom and four feline brothers and sisters. Our mom was sick, but she always took the time to care for us. Then COVID started, and mom couldn’t take care of all of us. She gave away my siblings to Animal Haven. She hoped they would find good homes. Then she passed away, and the rest of my family is alone, but together again. We have only one wish: to find a home where all of us can stay together and be a family again.

A CITY ON PAWS
BO, PUG, 10 YEARS OLD

My name is Bo. I’m a ten-year-old pug who spent his whole life with my best friend and owner. When they passed away from COVID, I was terrified. I am mostly blind and deaf, and I was afraid that I couldn’t find love again. Thankfully, Animal Haven found a beautiful new family to take care of me!

Beth Ostrosky Stern on the Dec. 12 Beth Stern & Friends’ Bash For The Bulldogs, life with Howard & more

Beth Stern & Friend / Photo: Rob Rich/SocietyAllure.com
Beth Stern & Friend / Photo:
Rob Rich/SocietyAllure.com

Beth Ostrosky Stern first achieved prominence as an actress and model in the late 1990s. That success helped Beth transition into careers as a television host and a best-selling author. Beth’s first book, Oh My Dog: How To Choose, Train, Groom, Nurture, Feed, And Care For Your New Best Friend — which reached #5 on a New York Times Best Sellers chart — widely-showcased her passion for animals. Now, beyond hosting annual events like the Kitten Bowl and the Hero Dog Awards on TV, Beth is known as one of the top animal rights activists out there.

On Dec. 12, Beth will be hosting Beth Stern & Friends’ Bash For The Bulldogs! at The London NYC Hotel. Attendees are set to include rapper and actor Ice-T, reality TV star and entrepreneur Coco Austin, Talk Stoop host Cat Greenleaf, movie producer Jason B. Hurwitz, and best-selling author Jill Rappaport. The event will include live jazz music, buffet dinner, cocktails and wine donated by Chatham Imports. Sponsors include Bulldog Gin and Tito’s Handmade Vodka, while items have been donated by novelist Patricia Cornwell, Staci Gruber, The RTA Store and The Honest Kitchen for a live auction. Tickets can be purchased at www.longislandbulldogrescue.org; proceeds will benefit the New York-based Long Island Bulldog Rescue.

Long Island Bulldog Rescue founder Laurette Richin arranged for Downtown to speak with Beth. No word if Beth’s beloved Howard will be attending this year’s event at this time. However, Beth can be followed on Twitter and Instagram via @BethStern.

You first became known for your work as a model, but now you are mostly known for your work as a host and a spokesperson. Was there a particular assignment or event that first let you showcase your personality?

Beth Stern: I have been involved in animal rescue my entire life. I was modeling in New York when I was asked if I would walk in a fashion show for a North Shore Animal League event and I didn’t leave the runway until every animal was adopted. I’ve been doing commercials my entire life and over the years have hosted several TV shows. It’s extra special when I can combine my passion for animals with speaking engagements or TV shows that promote animal adoption and rescue.

And what inspired you to become so involved with animals in the first place?

BS: I’ve been an animal lover since I was born. It’s in my blood. My entire family always rescued our pets and we also saved injured wildlife. Growing up my family had dogs, cats, guinea pigs, hermit crabs and chickens. We treated our pets as family members.

Is it ever challenging to be associated with animal-related causes? Or do you find it to be less taboo these days?

BS: I am very proud of the work I do to help bring awareness to animal causes. My husband and I foster cats and kittens, and I’ve heard I’m making the whole “crazy cat lady” stigma different! Go ahead and call me crazy if I’m helping to save lives and find homes for homeless animals in need!

How would you describe the upcoming Bash For The Bulldogs to someone who hasn’t attended it before?

BS: This is my favorite event of the year. It’s a magical room full of animal lovers, especially bulldog lovers! Bulldogs are everywhere! Guests bring their own bulldogs and there are always adoptable ones walking around or fast asleep in the middle of the noisy, crowded venue. It always makes me laugh. I always end up on the floor making out with all of the bulldogs!

Bash For The Bulldogs gala aside, what is coming up for you? Will you be hosting this year’s Kitten Bowl?

BS: Yes, I have been hosting Hallmark Channel’s Kitten Bowl for the past four years. We have an extra fun one planned for this Super Bowl Sunday! And the best part is that all of the dogs, cats, puppies and kittens all find forever homes after the taping. Yes, puppies and dogs will be making an appearance this year! I also am thrilled to co-host Hallmark Channel’s annual Hero Dog Awards as well.

Is there an accomplishment or credit of yours that you are most proud of?

BS: Fostering over 300 cats and kittens over the past three years. We’ve also fostered a sweet bulldog for L.I. Bulldog Rescue and found her forever home as well. Nothing makes me happier than helping an animal in need.

A lot of people became Beth fans a result of Howard. On a daily basis, do you encounter a lot of people saying “Bababooey” to you?

BS: No. People do stop me in the street and ask how my cats are doing, though! Howard and I have been together for over 16 years now.

When not busy with your work, how do you like to spend your free time?

BS: Howard and I are constantly busy with our six resident cats — three are special needs — as well as the foster cats and kittens we have at any given time.

Do you have a favorite restaurant in New York?

BS: Polo Bar and Scalinatella.

Finally, Beth, any last words for the kids?

BS: It’s the perfect time of year to open your hearts and homes to a pet in need. Adopt!

When it comes to apartment living and a busy schedule, there is no doubt that cats are the word. A seamless addition to a small apartment and busy lifestyle, cats can provide all of the love, company, and affection you’ll ever need, minus the maintenance. Gone are the days of waking up early to take your canine companion to the bathroom, or better yet, waking up to the realization that they confused your hardwood floors for the sidewalk during the night.

Contrary to popular belief, cats are one of the most self-sufficient pets around. They are actually easier to care for than a goldfish, and arguably a lot better company. However not all cats are perfect for apartments, so here is DOWNTOWN’s guide to the perfect breeds for city living!

Ragdoll

Ragdolls are one of the most popular breeds of cat in the United States, and it’s not hard to see why. This large semi-longhaired breed is renowned for its placid temperament, kind nature, and striking beauty. Ragdolls are strictly indoor cats, as due to their beauty and calm temperament they are often stolen or do not have instincts to defend themselves in conflict. This makes them excellent for apartment living! Although they are a semi-longhaired breed, Ragdolls only require moderate grooming and do not have as many health problems as similar breeds. Their calm temperament means they are happy to be alone for long periods of time, but their affectionate nature means they will be happy to share the couch when you return home from a long day at work!

British Shorthair

Heralding from across the pond, British Shorthairs are characterized by their distinctively chunky body, dense double coat, and broad face. While they are not strictly indoor cats, this medium-sized breed is known for its ability to adapt well to apartment life as they are not as active and playful as other breeds. Don’t be fooled by the shorthaired appearance of this breed, as the British Shorthair does have a double coat, meaning regular brushing is required. Reflective of the breed’s regal history, British Shorthairs are one of the most dignified and independent breeds around, however, this does not take away from their affectionate temperament and sweet nature, with cats often becoming very attached to their owner and home. Like many breeds of cat, British Shorthairs can sleep up to 18 hours per day, meaning they are more than happy to have the house to themselves for a relaxing day of catnapping.

Russian Blue

Originating from Russia, the Russian Blue, sometimes known as the Archangel Blues, is a shorthaired domesticated cat known for its shiny silver-blue coat and striking green eyes. This gentle breed is intelligent and playful but has a tendency to be shy and sensitive, meaning they dislike commotion and are ideally suited to a quiet life indoors. This breed tends not to shed, requires minimal grooming, has very few health problems, and is known to be tolerated better by people with cat allergies. If you’re looking for a low maintenance breed with a lovely temperament that is perfect for apartment living, then the Russian Blue may be the perfect cat for you!
