Inside Classic Harbor Line: Karen Helmerson on New York Harbor, Sailing, and Manhattan III
Classic Harbor Line owner Karen Helmerson discusses the beauty of New York Harbor, the ecological importance of the waterfront, and the launch of Manhattan III, the company’s newest luxury yacht handcrafted in classic 1920s style.
Many years ago Karen Helmerson was a scientific illustrator for NOAA, marine shoreline mapping. It changed her life. “Knowing NY Harbor, its waterfront and marine environment, is knowing one of the world’s greatest and most ecologically significant estuaries,” according to Helmerson. Maintaining a lifelong interest in sailing, Helmerson is an active member of the New York Harbor and Waterfront community, consulting on various projects and initiatives.
New York City’s Classic Harbor Line has been providing one of a kind boating experiences to locals and tourists alike since 1999. The Harbor Line takes customers on breathtaking tours through the waterways of New York aboard their fleet of yachts and schooners handcrafted by Scarano Boat Building. This past week, on May 19th, Downtown Magazine had the privilege of attending the christening of Classic Harbor Line’s newest vessel, the Manhattan III. An impressive feat, Manhattan III is 114 foot long 24 foot beam yacht built in the 1920s style.
Today we have Karen Helmerson, one of Classic Harbor Line’s owners, answering some questions about the business that has become a way of life.
1. Classic Harbor Line feels less like a business and more like a love letter to New York Harbor. What has it personally meant to you to help build something that gives people a chance to slow down and reconnect with the beauty of the city from the water?
It is profoundly rewarding to see the great pleasure Classic Harbor Line boats bring guests. Throughout my 25 years with the company, I’ve observed passengers transform from the moment they first step on board to when they disembark. They unwind, relax, and recharge, and some experience sailing for the very first time. The Harbor is a powerful body of water. Sailing on our wooden vessels that move with such grace through this environment and experiencing a perspective of the city that only the water can provide is a true gift. It is magical.
2. Watching guests experience these yachts, especially Manhattan III, what moment makes you personally feel most proud of what your family has built?
Every time I’m at the dock, I feel a quiet pride in seeing the boats. Classic Harbor Line is dedicated to the performance and aesthetic of the great wooden sailing yachts, both historic and modern, pioneering in design, engineering and physics. Watching these boats being built is witnessing rare skill and commitment. It is deeply gratifying to see them launch and the great pleasure they bring to people of all ages. For some, it changes their lives. This is what I am proud of, as a part of this family.
Downtown Magazine is thrilled to have had the opportunity to attend the christening of the Manhattan III and to continue to support Classic Harbor Line as an integral part of New York City’s waterways.
