Cosmetics Conferences Come to NYC

This March brings two of New York City’s biggest beauty shows to the Javits Center. From the 8th through the 10th, the International Esthetics, Cosmetics, & Spa Conference will allow industry professionals to come face to face with over 300 of the industry’s most critically acclaimed brands and suppliers. At the same time, The Beauty Experience New York will bring those same professionals together as an industry.

Produced by Questex and presented by American Spa, the International Esthetics, Cosmetics and Spa Conference (IECSC) New York is co-located with The Beauty Experience New York – the largest and longest-running professional beauty event in the country. Both shows are for professionals only and reach a wide cross-section of participants from beauty and spa product manufacturers and distributors to salon and spa owners and managers, hairstylists, hair colorists, estheticians, makeup artists, nail technicians, dermatologists, and massage therapists.

“As IECSC continues to grow, we’re so grateful for the sponsors who have played such an important role in our success over the last 30 years,” said Kathy Gruttadauria, Show Director for IECSC events. “We are constantly searching for new and enticing ways to enhance the conference, and this year we are excited to be expanding on some of our most popular spaces to stay ahead of trends such as technology and CBD in the spa and wellness industry.”

IECSC has also just announced its sponsor list, including Osmosis, Care Credit, Celluma, LightStim, Highlite the Korean Pavilion, Eminence, Repêchage, Farmhouse Fresh, Erchonia, The Good Patch, Starpil Wax, Silverfox Health & Beauty Inc., ProCell, Sorella, and many more!

Fashion fans will be able to access an epicenter of vintage shopping from a variety of top brands in fashion.

The selection of vintage dealers will be showcasing their one-of-a-kind apparel and accessories collections for the entire fashion community to have access to the best in vintage design, style, and period pieces. Each vintage dealer will be showcasing a unique facet of the industry with product available for wholesale and retail.

The product will range from luxury vintage designer, including Missoni and Versace, gowns and furs, to rare Victorian and Asian pieces such as Issey Miyake, alongside accessible active and sportswear, denim, T-shirts, and personal pieces from Norma Kamali‘s closet from as early as the turn of the century.

Intermezzo Collections first debuted its B2B VINTAGE (at) Intermezzo neighborhood at the NY Women’s May Show with returning curator and industry expert, Bridgette Morphew of Morphew Concept. Coming off of the success of this show, matched with the consumer demand for authenticity in their purchases, opening up the show to the public was the evident next step.

“Vintage brings provenance to one’s wardrobe and represents another time, when clothing and accessories were not mass produced but crafted by hand with a true love for the actual product itself. It speaks to the journey that has brought us to today and influences the way we see ourselves in the future,” said Peter Berta, Show Director.

Fashion icon and longtime fan of the Intermezzo Collection show, Iris Apfel, will be joining the esteemed designer Norma Kamali as well as Stephanie Solomon, the Vice President and Fashion Director at Lord & Taylor for a panel discussion moderated by Lauren Parker, Editor in Chief of Accessories Magazine on the benefits of vintage, and how retailers can use it to set their stores apart. The ‘Value of Vintage’ panel will be hosted on the Monday of the show at 2 p.m. in the Crystal Palace.

The fair will also include a Spring/Summer 2018 Trend Presentation on Sunday, August 6 at 2 p. m. and gives a detailed look at what’s driving the five biggest trends for the SS18 with a focus on accessories.

On Tuesday, at 10 a.m. there will be a Q&A with Rachel Shechtman, founder of themed retailer STORY. Called “The Compelling Curation: The Art of Storytelling,” Shechtman will talk about creating a brick-and-mortar experience that feels like a live webpage with its ever-changing themes, products and point of view.

Downtown Highlights From The Summer Fancy Food Show

If you’re the kind of person that likes to learn about new foods and products, and/or someone that wants to try new foods, then the Fancy Food Show series is a must-attend event.

This season’s event, the Summer Fancy Food Show took place at the Jacob Javits Center between Jun. 26 and 28, and I had the pleasure of attending on behalf of Downtown. Exhibitors were present from just about everywhere that you can think of, and samples of every sort were available to attendees. In turn, it was entirely feasible to enjoy cheese, meat, alcohol, ice cream, chips and spicy cuisine all in a five minute period…multiple times.

After speed-walking like a New Yorker, I had gotten through all of the exhibits in about three hours. Or so I had thought. It turns out that I had missed two rooms of the Javits Center, meaning that going through every exhibit in a rushed fashion still would have taken me almost a whole day. So had I taken the time to actually try every product, or actually converse with exhibitors, this could have been a three-day experience for me.

Here were some of the highlights for me from Monday, Jun. 27:

The New York-based Z Crackers has fans at Oprah Magazine and BobbyFlay.com. Wonderful crackers that come in a variety of flavors. Delicious with no guilt needed.

Bay Ridge, Brooklyn’s Aunt Butchie’s Desserts was serving up cheesecake-filled cones. Even sweeter than a cannoli with a soft cone-like shell. I went back for seconds.

Cookie sandwich with vanilla ice cream in the middle? Check. Chocolate dip on half of the sandwich? Check. An irresistible dessert from Joel’s Outrageous Cookies. Based in New Jersey, the company has plenty of other desserts to offer.

Everyone loves a great french fry, but fries tend to be one of those foods to lay off when you’re looking to improve your health. Fortunately, Veggie Fries present an interesting alternative with vegetable-based fries. Sure, the company’s carrot, broccoli, kale & bean, and chickpea & red pepper varieties all include potatoes, but three ounces of each is around 150 calories.

Craft beers, wines and liquors are very popular these days, giving “the majors” a run for their money. However, Crabbie’s is a mainstream hit in the U.K., distributed in over 26,000 pubs. I was very impressed by Crabbie’s Ginger Beer, full of flavor and close to 5% in ABV — a great summer drink.

Spring Kitchen — both based in Houston and Downtown Manhattan — specializes in natural, Vietnamese-style egg rolls. A great recipe from the Do Family.

While most vendors at the Summer Fancy Food show were playing up that their products were “gourmet,” the Family Food Company was serving up candy. They offered up an interesting variety of sweet and salty snacks, all of which with bright and colorful packaging.

The most enjoyable beef jerky I had of the day came from New Zealand Jerky. In spite of the company’s name, the product is packed in the States, both gluten-free and grass-fed is the beef.
