Here at Downtown Magazine, we love macarons. If you, too, are in love with these fun little French pastries, try your hand at baking them yourself at the Mille-Feuille Bakery. Multiple hands-on baking classes are being held at the bakery throughout the summer, but the next session takes place on Juno 20. During these classes, participants will spend two to two and a half hours preparing and baking their 25 macarons, which they will receive at the end of the class.
While the macarons are baking, participants will learn about the theory of the macaron and have a free tasting including hot beverages with the Parisian chefs of the bakery.
One such Parisian chef, Olivier Dessyn, is the owner of the Mille-Feuille bakery. He studied at the Ritz Cooking School in Paris and later completed his training at the Meurice Hotel alongside some of France’s greatest pastry chefs. Macarons happen to be Dessyn’s specialty. It wasn’t until 2010 that Dessyn decided to pursue his pastry chef dream and start work on a bakery in New York City. Mille-Feuille treats can now be found in three different locations, including Greenwich Village, the Upper West Side, and the Hotel Belleclaire.
The baking classes are limited to eight person per session and they start bright and early at 9:30 on Saturday mornings. The fee for one class is $135, but if you sign up for multiple classes you can get a discount, with two classes costing $199 and 3 classes costing $289. Other classes include baking lesson for croissants, Mille-Feuilles, Eclairs and Choux. Each of these classes include the opportunity to bring home your hand-made treats.
