Le District, a Lower Manhattan market located at Brookfield Place, evokes a classic French attitude. Their mission is to deliver delicious French-inspired cuisine in an environment where service and quality meet. This newly established market incorporates culinary-specific stations, entire restaurants, and a fresh grocery curated by their talented chefs and taste-makers. Le District has only been open for 9 weeks, but with its popularity, one would think that Le District has been here in Lower Manhattan for ages. It has made a name for itself, winning the new culinary superlative on the block. It also features a magnificent restaurant called the Beaubourg. With Chefs de Cuisine: Fabrice Renaudin, Nicolas Abello, and Chef Pâtissier: Jeffrey Wurtz, patrons can expect an evening they’ll never forget. The Beaubourg exudes a certain essence that is both casual and elegant in its atmosphere, the food that is prepared, and of course the punctual and mannerly service.
The restaurant also has a thriving cocktail bar – Le Bar. This unique addition to Le District is an important aspect to any New Yorker; whether you’re in the mood for casual happy hour or a romantic date, Le Bar is the place to “get drunk on the moment.”
For starters: Raw oysters from New York and Massachusetts, clams, mussels, and grilled shrimp is the perfect, salty, and light starter for any meal. An ideal dish to order with a small group of people. The taste is so fresh you will think you went down to the bottom of the sea and caught it yourself.
Pâté with frissee and gelatin from duck fat topped with a bit of sea salt. The creaminess from the pâté paired perfectly with the sour pungent taste of the gelatin. The frissee had a nice bitter, but clean taste which also provided a nice crunch.
Salmon en Papillotte with steamed vegetable julienne, endives, confit tomatoes, fried leeks and cilantro. The salmon was cooked to perfection. It had that nice pink glossy color when you know it’s just slightly undercooked. The leaks and the rest of the vegetables were tender and had a nice earthy flavor. A crisp crunch was added to the top of the dish to balance the textures out. With a green pool earthy and creamy sauce surrounding the dish, you’ll know you’re eating as healthy as can be.
Lobster frisette, also known as twisted pasta. This heavenly dish is made with lobster stock and tender vegetables such as carrots and asparagus. For all of you pasta lovers, this restaurant has your dish. You will never come face-to-face with a lighter pasta dish than this. With this simple dish, you can enjoy the magic of pasta without you feeling full and experiencing that heavy feeling afterwards. With tons of flavors, cooked-to-perfection vegetables, and lobster, you will be begging for a second serving… or maybe even third. This elegant comfort dish is perfect for a family night out, or just a regular night out in general.
Sole with crispy green beans and croutons. A classic French sauce cooked with capers and white wine. This decadent dish screams butter! Full of flavor and texture, you will fall in love instantly. The crunch from the green beans goes perfectly with the tender fall-apart fish. The croutons could be described as cubes of savory, buttery flavor. It’s a dish to die for.
Duck filet with orange rind, crispy string beans, and tender turnips. Waiter Alain Marcel stated, “We don’t serve it sliced like every other restaurant. We serve it as a steak, so it’s a thick piece.” Talk about duck done right! This tender, juicy, flavorful duck filet will make you want duck from Beaubourg for every meal. Each item on the plate paired perfectly with one another, but also you were able to eat each item on its own and still love them individually. The ultimate perfection of this dish is almost too good to be true, but you better believe it.
Profiteroles. Enough said. No one needs an excuse to eat this cutesy but elegant dessert. For all of you chocolate lovers, this brings chocolate to a new level. The cream puff, or choux à la crème was filled with ice-cream and complimented perfectly with the warm chocolate on the outside. Certainly a chocolate lover, or dessert lovers dream.
Mille Feuilles, also known as thousand layers. A classic vanilla slice, custard slice, also known as the Napoleon, is a classic French pastry. With a flaky pastry and smooth rich custard cream on the inside you will love the subtlety of this dish. The fresh fruit and powdered sugar bring a little more sweetness as a whole, but every flavor is simple, but powerful together.
Downtown saved the best for last, the classic crème brûlée also known as burnt cream, crema catalana, or Trinity cream is a dessert consisting of a rich custard base topped with a contrasting layer of torched sugar. It was perfect in every way. So perfect, in fact, it will turn non crème brûlée lovers instantly. The custard was light, smooth, and had great consistency. The flavors were subtle, but in a way that made you feel satisfied with every bite. The crème brûlée is one of the most classic French desserts, and Beaubourg certainly did it justice.
