The Heart of The Village is a food and culture walking tour that all culinary enthusiasts in New York should try. The tour was given 4.9 out of 5 stars at Zerve by over 2,300 foodies, and is prominent for merging historical elements with some of the best grub Greenwich Village has to offer.
On the tour, you will learn about the counter-culture that exists in the Village and be educated on social revolutions that have been pivotal for the neighborhood’s artistic community. You will learn about New York’s underground waterways, see architecture from the 19th century and get inside recommendations on where to go for live music, comedy clubs, and of course—where to eat.
Tastings at seven eateries is included in the tour price ($52 a guest), and the guides will take you to restaurants, cafes and food shops, including a former Mafia haunt. Food alternates are available for vegetarians, but not for those with food allergies.
Here are the eight places you will try:
Artichoke Basille’s Pizza: One of the favored pizzerias in New York. Artichoke is a chain that bakes specialty pies and slices available daily and late night. They have three downtown locations—East 14th Street., 10th Avenue, and MacDougal Street.
MeltKraft: A shop that specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches and makes all of their own cheese. Located downtown on MacDougal St.
Masala Times: A South Asian (Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi) restaurant on Bleecker Street. “Masala” is a Hindi adjective used to describe a mixture of spices—a technique that is prominent on Masala Times’ menu.
Cuba: A Cuban eatery that serves brunch, lunch and dinner on Thompson Street.
Toloache Taqueria: A Mexican restaurant that offers a wide selection of burritos, tacos, soups and salads located on Maiden Lane.
Montes Trattoria: A family owned and operated Italian restaurant that has been open for nearly 20 years. Located on West 4th Street.
Brigadeiro Bakery: A Brazilian bakery on Sullivan Street that specializes in Brigadeiros—a bite-size Brazilian chocolate ball similar to a bonbon.
Sullivan Street Tea & Spice Company: A dainty snug store on Sullivan Street that offers the largest selection of premium organic teas. They have cups-to-go and also sell herbs, spices and culinary salts.
