Everyday is National Doughnut Day in our book, but since 1938 the first Friday in June is recognized by the Salvation Army as National Donut Day, USA to commemorate the men and women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I.

To join in the National Donut Day celebrations, Downtown Magazine is recommending, no, demanding you that you must eat a doughnut. And if you want the best of the best, we recommend Doughnut Plant.

Started in 1994, baker, Mark Israel, opened Doughnut Plant in the Lower East Side, using a doughnut recipe passed down from his grandfather. Since then, Israel has opened four New York locations as well as locations in Japan.

Made fresh daily, Doughnut Plant is far from the ordinary doughnut. Using only natural ingredients, and priding themselves on using no artificial flavors or colors, no eggs and no trans fats or preservatives in their doughnuts, you don’t have to feel guilty splurging.

But what really makes these the doughnuts that you need to eat on June 5?

Lets start with the texture. Doughnut Plant does not use eggs in their recipe, meaning their texture is as uncommon as their flavors. One Downtown editor described her strawberry cake donut as “like a strawberry pancake.”

Next up are the flavors. With unique flavors such as mole chocolate, tres leches, matcha green tea, and peanut butter banana cream, Doughnut Plant will make you forget every glazed donut you ever had. And with wide variety of yeast, cake, cream-filled and changing seasonal donuts you never have to eat the same doughnut twice (though you may want to).

Doughnut Plant is a departure from the usual, and if we have not yet convinced you that these are the doughnuts worth getting on National Donut Day USA, then here is a little extra push. Doughnut Plant is celebrating the holiday by giving out a free carnival sprinkles mini cake doughnut with every order that day.

We will see you there.
