Last week, the Offshore Sailing School’s KidsSail program — now in its second year — graduated over 140 new junior sailors in the Greater New York area. The program also expanded its reach into New Jersey this season with a special STEM Sailing Program in partnership with the Liberty Science Center.
The community-centric program continued this year with two young Battery Park City residents joining the team as junior counselors. In addition, over 40 scholarships were awarded through a partnership with the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club. This is the second year that Offshore Sailing School has shared the gift of sailing with underprivileged children through the Boys & Girls Club program.
“Offshore Sailing School has given our members the opportunity to sail on the Hudson River while learning the intricacies of sailing,” began Antonio Fort, Jr., Director of Clubhouse Operations of Madison Square Boys & Girls Club. He continued: “In 15 hours of sailing, our youth practice and experience patience and persistence while engaged in learning new skills from professional sailing instructors. While learning safety techniques, they have fun and relax a bit too. They get to see Manhattan Island from a totally different perspective. In a sailboat, with New York City as the backdrop, I believe they gain respect for the power of the river and mother nature in general.”
Offshore Sailing School operates two locations in New York Harbor; one at North Cove Marina in Battery Park City and the other at Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City, New Jersey. Last season, KidsSail was enjoyed out of the Battery Park location with a strong focus on getting more young residents out on the water.
