It is always hard adjusting to another place while traveling. Of the many things, food is always an important factor when abroad. It might seem appealing to eat out every day and night, but that isn’t the best thing to do. While it is great to experience ethnic food, it’s not great to do all the time.

Of course, it’s still important to get the daily nourishment that we need. So the first thing to do is check out a local grocery store. Cooking can seem daunting at times, but it really is simple. Breakfast can be some instant oatmeal with bananas or yogurt. Lunch or dinner can consist of a pasta salad or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (or any other sandwich for that matter). For snacks, have a nut trail mix, fruit or a whole grain pastry. Pack your own meals whenever you can and always bring a reusable water bottle. Also, some hotels have complimentary breakfast, so that’s always a plus. Fish out the healthy foods in the meal and it’ll keep you full for a good while.

For exercise, I find that all the walking and other activities during the trip do the deed for me. However, if I still feel like I need a workout, there are plenty of ways to get one without actually finding a gym nearby. Workout videos are all over the internet and you can do them in the comfort of your own space. While abroad, find a workout buddy. This person will not only keep you motivated but also you can also use your imaginations and find new ways to exercise together.

Another option is to change your method of transportation: bike everywhere (this is practically a requirement if you’re abroad in Amsterdam like I am). The last tip for exercising while abroad is to make yourself accountable. If you make plans to work out, tell your flatmates and everyone around you. This way you’ll feel obligated to achieve what you set out to do.
