Ambrose Beer & Lobster is the go-to place to get lobster in NYC. You’ll almost think you’re in Maine. This laid back bar and family restaurant that is located on 18 Fulton Street at the South Street Seaport officially opened up on May 14th this year. Still in its prime, Ambrose is thriving and a perfect option to visit for a delicious lobster roll on the only lobster day of the year.
Downtown spoke with the co-founder of Ambrose, Telly Hatzigeorgiou, and he let us in on his inspiration with his partner Bill Zafiros, behind opening up the successful home of their delicious lobster. When Hatzigeorgiou was in college he worked at Sloppy Louie’s, one of the best seafood places at the time, and working there helped him pay his way through college. All the fish and the market across the street inspired him to open up his own restaurant.
While everything is strategically done to create a more desirable ambiance for the customers, the team at Ambrose put their hearts and souls into their food, not only in the preparation, but in the lengths of receiving the best quality lobster for their customers.
“Chef Jason Mayer, has gone through a billion lobster taste tests in search for the perfect quality of lobster, nothing is ever frozen,” Hatzigeorgiou said.
Downtown also wanted to know Hatzigeorgiou’s thoughts on the location for Ambrose since downtown is, in fact, the heart of every city.
“I absolutely love it. I live in Tribeca, and I see the seaport get so lively and fantastic, I love what they have done on the water, promenade, and the crown jewel of downtown,” Hatzigeorgiou said. “Howard Hughes is my landlord and they are amazing on what they do with the pier, Beets and Beer Garden and now they are turning it into a park. I couldn’t imagine a better place to have Ambrose be located.”
But enough about the history and the relaxed, carefree ambiance. We know exactly what you guys came for – the juicy lobster details:
Last week, Ambrose was generous enough to send Downtown samples of many lobster, and even non-lobster items that they offer on their menu. The staff at Downtown munched on tasty bites such as traditional lobster rolls, lobster grilled cheeses, feta and watermelon salad, and giant pretzels. It’s safe to say that everyone in the office approves and 100 percent recommends Ambrose, but we may need to hit the gym for a few days!
Ambrose provides many lobster items for all patrons to try and love. But if you aren’t sure what to get, their most popular item is the traditional lobster roll; trust us, every last bite is absolutely decadent. However, if you are trying to watch those carbs, there are healthier options as well. For instance, one can order the lobster wraps which also happens to be Hatzigeorgiou’s favorite menu item as well.

Let us not forget though that Ambrose is not just known for their impeccable lobster, but if you want a great pairing then Ambrose is pretty much known for their “super craft beer AND great lobster,” Hatzigeorgiou said.
For National Lobster Day on June 15, Ambrose will be offering customers a special deal which includes one lobster roll, a bag of chips, and a specialty craft beer for just $20. So be sure to come out, get your lobster fix at Ambrose Lobster & Beer, and celebrate National Lobster Day!
