Asphalt Green Executive Director Carol Tweedy is retiring, and will be succeeded this summer by executive Maggy Siegel.
After more than two decades, Asphalt Green Executive Director Carol Tweedy is retiring, and will be succeeded this summer by executive Maggy Siegel, according to an announcement on Thursday.
The not-for-profit organization – which assists individuals of all ages and backgrounds achieve health through a lifetime of sports and fitness – announced the succession late yesterday.
“It has been an honor to lead Asphalt Green over the past 20 years, bringing vital sports and fitness programs to tens of thousands of New Yorkers each year. I am proud of the work we have done,” Tweedy said. “Asphalt Green has a bright future ahead and I look forward to watching the organization continue to thrive and grow under the direction of Maggy.”
A city-wide agency, Asphalt Green has two first class campuses: a beautiful 5½-acre Upper East Side campus and a 52,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility in Battery Park City, which formally opened last year.
Tweedy previously announced her intention to retire, prompting the search process to begin in November 2013. The search for the new Executive Director was led by a committee of Asphalt Green’s Board of Directors, with the assistance of search firm Phillips Oppenheim.
The search yielded more than 125 serious applicants, and board members unanimously elected Siegel to start as the next Executive Director on July 1.
Siegel has a long and distinguished career as a successful business innovator and operator with both emerging businesses and international brands, including Dylan’s Candy Bar, Chanel USA, Coach, and Tiffany & Co.
Her leadership extends into the non-profit sector, as board member and most recently, as acting CEO of CancerCare, the leading national organization dedicated to providing free professional support services to anyone affected by cancer, where she revitalized the 70-year-old organization to financial stability.
“Carol’s contributions to the success and distinction of Asphalt Green are too numerous to list,” Siegel said. “As a neighbor of Asphalt Green on the Upper East Side for over 25 years, my family and I have personally benefitted from Carol’s dedication to making Asphalt Green such an exceptional place.”
She added, “I look forward to working with the entire AG board and staff to ensure and expand upon her many accomplishments. Thanks to the strong foundation built by Carol, Asphalt Green has an exciting future and I feel extremely privileged to be part of it.”
Community service is at the core of Asphalt Green’s origin and at the heart of its mission, and the nonprofit delivers services to underserved populations, from youth to seniors, in all five boroughs of the city.
In 2013, Asphalt Green programs reached more than 30,000 children on our uptown campus, and another 30,000 directly in local community facilities. Future growth promises to engage with more than the 150 current public schools throughout the city.
Asphalt Green is poised to complete its $2.25 million FIT KIDS FIT CITY fundraising campaign to support free programs in school playgrounds, gymnasiums, and pools across New York City.
Board Chairman Andy Nussbaum praised Tweedy for her strong leadership, and anticipated a similarly strong future for Asphalt Green.
“We were thrilled to meet many excellent candidates during the search, from so many different sectors and backgrounds,” Nussbaum said. “Carol’s world-class leadership has made Asphalt Green a vital part of New York City. With Carol’s extraordinary legacy, Maggy’s leadership and the excellence of our AG staff, we will do even more, delivering even more services to our communities in need, in the years to come.”
He continued, “Maggy will bring her characteristic passion, energy and business sense to this enterprise, and we look forward to working with her on Asphalt Green’s exciting next chapter. The Board thanks our key, dedicated leaders Jeff Dorn and Paul Weiss and the rest of the AG staff for managing AG through this transition.”
