From New York to Paris, this spring designers focused on an artistic trend reflected in the prints rather than the silhouettes of their collections.
Karl Lagerfeld transformed Le Grand Palais into a gigantic art gallery for the Chanel show, inspired by Art Basel, Jeff Koons and Jay Z’s album Picasso Baby. Phoebe Philo for Céline showed the freedom of Brassaï; bold graphic prints mixed together are a representation of graffiti and street art. Back in New York, Proenza Schouler’s dynamic duo Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez went in a more minimal and subtle direction, with prints of black and white hand painted stripes that evoke flora et fauna. At Prada, the collection had a gang element, inspired by femininity, sportswear and street art in South America and Mexico.
It’s time to go bold- hide your leopard prints and look to Van Gogh’s paintings for direction. This spring it’s print time. – Paris Amaro
