The U.S. Badminton Championships are Returning to Suffolk County Community College

The U.S. Badminton Championships are returning to Suffolk County Community College for the second year in a row since moving from California to the east coast last year. The tournament will be held at the Michael J. Grant Campus’ Health, Sports and Education Center field house in Brentwood, NY.

The 2015 U.S. Open Badminton Championships, part of BWF Grand Prix Gold Series, boasts a total prize of $120,000 for the winner. The tournament will feature 348 players from 30 countries and some of the world’s top 25 ranked competitors including Men’s Singles Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, the former number one player in the world, holder of two silver medals from 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games and winner of numerous World Super series titles. This is a qualifying event for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The six-day event will conduct a men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles games. The tournament will kick off with the Qualify Rounds on Tuesday, June 16 at 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The Michael J. Grant Campus Field House is the largest facility of its kind in Suffolk County being 57,800 sq feet and can seat up to 4,800 spectators for exhibits and conventions and 2,700 spectators for sporting events.
