From the South Street Seaport, looking north up the East River. Years ago, while on a Circle Line around Manhattan, I got the "BMW" tip for remembering which bridge is which. Don't really need it anymore, though. Busy night in the sky. I waited for a train to cross the Manhattan Bridge. Single exposure, 30s.

In light of the South Street Seaport’s prospective transformation from historic New York vestige to mecca for innovative ventures in retail, entertainment and food, WWD has released its Ten of Tomorrow list. This list recognizes leaders in fashion and retail innovation as they connect with the transforming seaport. Projected to be complete in 2017, the district will feature several blocks worth of shiny new stores, restaurants and a cinema.

The 2016 list’s honorees include off-the-wall designer Simon Porte Jacquemus whose whimsical caricature designs challenge traditional drapery and Oak Labs, who are transforming the relationship between tech and retail. Other innovators on the list include Brother Vellies, Altuzarra, Sarah Flint and Koche. These brands test the conventional, whether it is through their aesthetic their mission or their marketing. Throughout the year, these names will be promoted in a more in depth fashion through WWD and the South Street Seaport’s programing.
