Downtown’s Top 10 Spring/Summer 2017 Trends

Although NYC weather is not completely spring-like at the moment, with the month of May right around the corner, our wardrobes have officially transitioned from heavy coats to flowy dresses.

We spotted a couple remarkable trends on the runways in September as designers showcased their Spring/Summer ’17 collection. Notable trends went from exaggerated stripes and various shades of pink to jumpsuits and head-to-toe floral motifs. Additionally, top brands seemed to all agree on one thing: Bigger is better.

This spring and summer, designs are all about being playful with large silhouettes and exaggerated patterns. The sun will bring originality in terms of wardrobe and accessories with key players in the fashion industry betting on flashy colors as well as underwear becoming outerwear.

I’ve Found My Spring & Summer Shoe!

A new favorite shoe brand of mine — it would be unfair of me not to share with New Yorkers and the world — fashion beauty and comfort rolled into one.

I have never put on a pair of shoes and felt that they were an extension of me. With their beautiful designs, extraordinary comfort and vibrant colors, Cocorose shoes do just that.

This British brand will give every foldable ballerina shoe which has come before them a run to the finish line. Year round style and comfort, a lifestyle brand designed with soft cushioned leather insoles and fashion-forward styles, crafted for life on the go. You can be sure that I’ll be donning my first pair, Carnaby Grey with Parrot Applique right here in and around my Downtown this season!

A note from Cocorose of London:

Fashion and mood are widely touted to go hand in hand. That is why our SS17 collection draws inspiration from an array of seasonal colours and prints, designed to bring a smile to people’s faces.

Combining trend through embroidery, humour and a colourful pallet with our signature foldable function, we have created a flawless answer to comfort and stress-free packing throughout the spring and summer months.

Our Bloomsbury yellow ballerinas and Clapham yellow loafers are perfect for Easter. Handcrafted from the softest leathers, these smart flats are purposely designed for our customers to not just look stylish, but to feel great and incredibly comfortable too.

Cocorose is committed to accommodating a 21st century lifestyle for women through shoes that combine style, comfort and function and our Bloomsbury ballerinas and Clapham loafers seamlessly encapsulate this mission.

The kids collection offers similar styles offered for adults such as boots, booties and sneakers. TOMS also incorporated more glitter and holiday patterns into the classic TOMS collection.

In addition to their new rollout of shoes, TOMS added a holiday bag collection in teal, ash and camoflauge for men and women including duffle bags, wallets, totes and handbags. For each bag that is purchased, proceeds will help improve birth conditions around the world.

Through TOMS’ new collection of sunglasses of aviator shades and its Travelers collection, the brand will help improve the impaired vision in children.

TOMS wants everyone to experience the gift of giving, prior to the presentation the charitable brand to revealed its true purpose and what TOMS is all about. We went on a virtual trip to Peru where the creator of TOMS Animal Initiatives, Heather Mycoskie, gave us a glimpse of their global impact. The trip sheds light on the struggle children face in other countries and the effect donating a pair of shoes can have in their life. TOMS One for One movement donates an exclusive pair of shoes and creates a better experience for children around the world.

United Nude Combines Architecture With Luxury Shoes

Design and fashion brand, United Nude, released its Spring/Summer collection featuring an array of eye catching sandals, high heels, shoes, back packs, and clutches. With Galahad Clark’s background in shoes and Rem D. Koolhaa’s knowledge in architecture, United Nude became the leading creative shoe brands since their launch of the Möbius shoe in 2003.
Downtown magazine caught up with Koolhaas to learn more behind the brand:
What’s the meaning behind “United Nude?”
People working together in a transparent way.
What inspired you to blend luxury shoes with architecture?
I felt the need to scale down from a larger architectural scale to the smallest and most vulnerable one: that of a woman’s foot. It was just before my graduation while I was heartbroken over a girl.

How do you manage to combine comfort and style for your consumers?
We offer a wide range of products varying in many levels of comfort and style. The higher the heel, the less comfortable. We try not to make our shoes too high unless it’s a special.
All of your shoes are pretty abstract, what’s separates the Lo Res Earth and Lo Res Sandal from the rest of your collection?
The Lo Res products are designed according to our Lo Res design principle, where we re-create an object over- and over again, each time less defined by carefully placed, less 3D points, resulting in a more fragmented/facetted design.
You collaborate with many designers like Iris Van Herpen, 223, and Zaha Hadid to name a few, how important is it for shoemakers to collaborate with other designers?
For our most recent Re-Inventing Shoes collaboration we worked with 5 top designers for 5 shoes at the same time: Zaha Hadid, Ross Lovegrove, Fernando Romero, Ben van Berkel and Michael Young. It’s important for us to collaborate as we find this a very productive way to push boundaries, to discover new things, to create stories, to learn and to have fun.
Who are some designers that you’d like to collaborate with in the future?
We are already working on a few new projects, but we never really talk about it before it’s close to launch. In general I would like to work with more people from the film industry.
Who is the wearer of United Nude?
Design and/or fashion conscious people with their own style.
What can we expect from your fall/winter collection?
Geometric designs, comfortable constructions, and a wide range of great materialisation’s including some great metallic brush-off leathers.
