With this winter being long and brutally cold, we are counting down the days until spring. Luckily, it is just around the corner, and after surviving this winter, it is time to bring your dog in for a little spring cleanup! Here are some tips, courtesy of Le Pet Spa in Battery Park City on what you can do to make your dog warm weather ready!

1.) Incorporate supplements into your dog’s food

During the early spring months, dogs often have very dry skin and fur, with chapped paws due to the salt spread on the roads and sidewalks during the winter. Adding a fish oil supplement such as salmon oil or omega-3 tablets or liquid to your dog’s food. This change can help out tremendously with your pet’s hair and skin in a matter of a couple of weeks.

2.) Grooming, grooming, grooming!

First and foremost, your dog will need a good haircut and grooming session to get rid of all the winter grime from their coat. Le Pet Spa is a fantastic place to take your dog, as they are patient, loving, and diligent towards caring for your animal. Sometimes, dogs get nervous or anxious when they are at the groomer’s, but Le Pet Spa ensures that your pet will get the utmost care from their well-trained groomers. The Spa also uses all natural grooming products, and recommends giving your dog a hot oil treatment to invigorate their coat and skin.

3.) For when warm weather does arrive: Apply sunscreen & reliever for allergies

Doggie sunscreen is a must for when the NY heat arrives! Dog owners should apply sunscreen on bare spots like the ears, behinds, and paws. If your dog has a short haircut, you can even apply it directly on their hair and it will absorb into their skin. Allergies is another hot topic for dogs during the spring. When your fur friend starts itching and lick areas that bother them, apply a topical hot-spot “reliever” to the area, and make an appointment with your vet to discuss what could be potentially causing the allergies.

With these tips, you and your dog should be ready for spring (and summer!) And be sure to check out Le Pet Spa in Battery Park City to get the utmost care for your pet!
