It’s about that time to start packing up those winter sweaters and coats and making room for your favorite spring pieces. To make room for your spring clothes (both old and new pieces), here are some tips to help you clear out your closet in preparation for the warmer weather!

1.) Define what you wear/prioritize

First things first, look at what you have in your closet. Try to pinpoint what your style is, and what items in your closet fits your personal style. You will want to keep around those pieces that you know are staples in your closet. Lay everything out and prioritize. What do you want to save? Stash? And just plain bid adieu?

Although warmer months are around the corner, you may want to keep a jacket and a few cardigans around just in case Mother Nature decides to keep the cooler temperatures around for a bit longer.

2.) Divide

After you’ve gone through your closet and laid everything out, now it’s time to divide. Put your clothes into three different categories: everyday, favorites, and special occasion. This can not only help you decide what to get rid of, but also more of what you need. Have a lot of really nice, special occasion tops but never wear them? You want a closet that you actually love what you wear, rather than a closet that you just love to look at.

3.) Remove old items or things you definitely haven’t worn in awhile

Follow the one-year rule. An oldie, but a goodie. If you haven’t worn something in around a year, then chances are, you probably won’t wear it again. Although it may have been one of your staple pieces a couple years ago, there’s no point in holding onto it! It is just taking up space in your closet, and you can easily toss it to make room for something new and that pertains to your personal style now.

4.) Try it on

For things that you wear often, to things that you don’t, the best way to decide if you want to keep or toss it is to try things on! That dress from a couple years ago that hugged you in all the right places may not look the same when you try it on today. Be sure to determine what fits, and what doesn’t so you can make the process of getting rid of clothes an easier one.

5.) Invest in organization

Now that you’ve gone through your closet and decided what you’re keeping and tossing, it’s time to get organizing! Keep on top of your wardrobe by investing in containers, slim hangers, shoe compartments, etc. This will save you space, time and money in the long run.
