Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Meghann Wright will be opening up for folk singer/songwriter Chuck Ragan and Jesse Malin at Irving Plaza on Sept. 19 in support of her new LP, Nothin’ Left to Lose, starting at 8 p.m.
She recently appeared as a part of the Warped Tour’s Acoustic Basement stage, and is also the founder of The City & The Heart, a New York advocacy organization that supports independent female artists. Paired with her passion for music and worthwhile causes, Wright has also hosted showcases raising money for women’s shelters, as well as produced a compilation album Brooklyn based female singer/songwriters.
Meghann was kind of enough to answer a few questions for Downtown via email about her music and upcoming performance, and it is one you will not want to miss!
What can people expect from your show at Irving Plaza on Saturday?
I’ll playing songs from my new album Nothin’ Left To Lose that came out on Blacktop Records this summer while I was on Vans Warped Tour. I’m super stoked to be playing with my band The Sure Thing featuring my favorite rhythm section comprised of Andrew Nesbitt on drums and Eva Lawitts on bass. I’m very excited about our most recent addition Mr. Sonny Ratcliff on electric guitar.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music?
My sound is pretty eclectic considering my diverse musical background. It is primarily guitar-based rock music but decorated by influences from blues, country, ’60s girl bands, and mid ’90s indie rock.
Who are some of your musical influences/inspirations?
I’m inspired by artists who know how to tell a story so the audience will be able to make it their own like Jason Isbell, Tori Amos and Tom Petty. Sometimes production or instrumentation is more important to me like the giant epic-sounding “Do You Like Rock Music?” album by British Sea Power or the sparse modern grooviness of the new album by Run The Jewels. I am also inspired by artists who do positive things with their music and their social standing like Brandy Carlile, Koji, and Dolly Parton.
What was your experience like playing on the Warper Tour?
I had a blast playing Warped Tour, seeing different cities and making new friends, meeting fans I didn’t know I had in all corners of the country. Brian Marquis invented and ran the stage I played called the Acoustic Basement stage. It was an awesome community of artists and an intimate concert experience which was quite different from the vibes at the other stages. I was a little put off by the lack of real punk bands that VWT used to be known for and upon which its legacy was built. It would be nice to see its format return to the traditional lineup, as well as to have more female artists on the bill. I am very grateful for the experience.
How has the reception been of your newly released LP, Nothin’ Left to Lose?
From what has made its way to me, I think reception has been mostly positive, thankfully!
If you could collaborate with any artist at the moment, who would it be and why?
There are so many artists I dream about collaborating with. I really love collaborating with any and everyone, really. If absolutely had to pick one person, it would be a tie between Jason Isbell, Dolly Parton, and Bruno Mars. If all four of us did a song together I think I would be able to hang up my guitar and call it a day.
