Credit to Lilac Preservation Project
Get ready to read your favorite books while relaxing on the Hudson River because a floating library is coming to NYC’s waterway.
The Lilac Steamship was built in 1933 and was used to service United States Lighthouses. It is the only United States steam-powered lighthouse tender and is currently doubling as a museum. From September 6 to October 13, The Lilac Steamship will turn into a library for everyone to enjoy.
The Floating Library is designed by Beatrice Glow who graduated with a BFA from New York University and is a project-based artist. The library will feature books written by typically overlooked authors, as well as art books, poetry, and manifestos. Visitors will be able to enjoy free programs including performances, discussions, and political and creative workshops. All reading materials are only available to be read on board. At the end of the Floating Library’s journey, the books will be donated to high school students with “demonstrated needs.”
The Lilac Steamship is set to depart from Hudson River Park’s Pier 25 at North Moore Street. For more information about the Floating Library and The Lilac Steamship visit the Floating Library website.
Visit the Lilac Steamboat museum on Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and weekends from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. starting September 6th.
