When it comes to long work hours and high rise city living, many feel that a four-legged friend may complicate things a little too much. However, if you’re in need of some company, DOWNTOWN has the perfect solution, with our perfect NYC pet guide! Having a pet in New York City is much easier than you think, so look past the puppy love and tune in to our expert guide on picking the purrfect feline friend!

When it comes to apartment living and a busy schedule, there is no doubt that cats are the word. A seamless addition to a small apartment and busy lifestyle, cats can provide all of the love, company, and affection you’ll ever need, minus the maintenance. Gone are the days of waking up early to take your canine companion to the bathroom, or better yet, waking up to the realization that they confused your hardwood floors for the sidewalk during the night.

Contrary to popular belief, cats are one of the most self-sufficient pets around. They are actually easier to care for than a goldfish, and arguably a lot better company. However not all cats are perfect for apartments, so here is DOWNTOWN’s guide to the perfect breeds for city living!

Ragdoll

Ragdolls are one of the most popular breeds of cat in the United States, and it’s not hard to see why. This large semi-longhaired breed is renowned for its placid temperament, kind nature, and striking beauty. Ragdolls are strictly indoor cats, as due to their beauty and calm temperament they are often stolen or do not have instincts to defend themselves in conflict. This makes them excellent for apartment living! Although they are a semi-longhaired breed, Ragdolls only require moderate grooming and do not have as many health problems as similar breeds. Their calm temperament means they are happy to be alone for long periods of time, but their affectionate nature means they will be happy to share the couch when you return home from a long day at work!

British Shorthair

Heralding from across the pond, British Shorthairs are characterized by their distinctively chunky body, dense double coat, and broad face. While they are not strictly indoor cats, this medium-sized breed is known for its ability to adapt well to apartment life as they are not as active and playful as other breeds. Don’t be fooled by the shorthaired appearance of this breed, as the British Shorthair does have a double coat, meaning regular brushing is required. Reflective of the breed’s regal history, British Shorthairs are one of the most dignified and independent breeds around, however, this does not take away from their affectionate temperament and sweet nature, with cats often becoming very attached to their owner and home. Like many breeds of cat, British Shorthairs can sleep up to 18 hours per day, meaning they are more than happy to have the house to themselves for a relaxing day of catnapping.

Russian Blue

Originating from Russia, the Russian Blue, sometimes known as the Archangel Blues, is a shorthaired domesticated cat known for its shiny silver-blue coat and striking green eyes. This gentle breed is intelligent and playful but has a tendency to be shy and sensitive, meaning they dislike commotion and are ideally suited to a quiet life indoors. This breed tends not to shed, requires minimal grooming, has very few health problems, and is known to be tolerated better by people with cat allergies. If you’re looking for a low maintenance breed with a lovely temperament that is perfect for apartment living, then the Russian Blue may be the perfect cat for you!
