Went over to Roosevelt Island today. For those who don't know, I think it's where the city kept the lepurs or something. I believe Spiderman also fought the Green Goblin here. Anyway, this is the Queensboro aka 59th St. Bridge. Not the prettiest during the day, but it looks OK at night. I wanted to get a shot with some identifiable buildings in the background--here, the Citigroup Center, Bloomberg Tower, and UN. The glow from the Empire State Building is also apparent. Because most of the buildings around the bridge are residential, there weren't as many lights on as I was hoping. I need to meet someone who lives over there to get me onto the roof of one of the buildings. Single exposure / ISO 200 / f/8 / 20s / 18mm Large on black. Huge 2000-pixel-wide version.

1. Havana Film Festival

East Village Cinema (East Village)
Thurs, Apr 7th-Fri, Apr 15th (Check site for showtimes)

With the warming relations between the US and Cuba, the Havana Film Festival New York is the perfect opportunity to get the know the voices of Cuban and Latin American cinema. We are definitely going to check out El acompañante, Made in Bangkok, Viva, La rueda de la vida and La Ballerine.

2. Taste of Lower East Side
Metropolitan Pavilion (Chelsea)
Wed, April 6th from 6pm-10pm

Now in its 16th year, Taste of Lower East Side is an event of good food for a good cause. The $195 ticket gives budding philanthropists and foodies access to unlimited tasting of over 50 LES restaurants, including culinary superstars like Stanton Social, Fung Tu, Porsena, and an open bar. More importantly, however, goers will be supporting many wonderful Grand St. Settlement and JUMP! community programs.

3. Sailing Cheese and Wine
Pier 62 (Chelsea)
Fri, Apr 8th at 6:30pm Sat, April 9th at 1:30pm

This weekly wine and cheese cruise will traverse the oceans to bring guests a taste of the Old World and of the New. While our eyes feast on spectacular views of the city, our palates will learn about and taste wines and cheeses from the Europe and see how they fare with those from good ol’ America.

4. Brunch Bash
Ludlow Studios (Lower East Side)
Sun, Apr 9th from 12:30-3pm

LocalBozo.com presents Brunch Bash, an afternoon of bottomless drinks and brunch foods from restaurants like Resto, The Cannibal, Swine, The Marshal, Raymi, Calle Dao and The Stand. Hallelujah!

5. Art in Outer Space
Benrubi Gallery (Chelsea)
Tues-Sat from 10am-6pm (Through Sat, May 14th)

Michael Najjar’s solo exhibition, Outer Space, is other worldly! A record of his personal experience as the first civilian artist training to travel in outer space, the large scale photos in the exhibit show a “futuristic world, inspired by cutting-edge aeronautic technologies and the nascent space tourism industry.” A truly remarkable show!

6. Tartan Gastropub
Highlands (West Village)
Nightly

On April 9th, New York celebrates National Tartan Day with its annual parade through 6th Avenue. After we’ve had our fill of bagpipes, kilts and dancing, we’re heading to West Village’s ultra-cool Scottish gastropub, Highlands. With an extensive list of whiskeys, malts, and cocktails as well as a modern spin on traditional dishes such as the haggis, neeps and tatties and beef wellington, we think this is pretty great way to celebrate Scotland in New York.
