Chevrolet is going to make driving that much easier. On June 24th the car brand will debut two new features, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, in 14 of their 2016 models, including the all-new 2016 Cruze.

Through USB connection, drivers can access key apps, such as mapping, media, message, and phone within reach via touchscreen. This newest technology is a smarter, simpler way to be connected, while staying safe.

Through the MyLink system, drivers can connect their devices with seven-inch cords. The eight-inch version of MyLink is only compatible with Apple CarPlay at the beginning of the 2016 model year. This version may be available for Android Auto later within the model year.

Chevrolet’s Chief of Infotainment, Phil Abram, emphasized that the two features won’t distract drivers. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are designed to be compatible with the driving experience.

With larger and fewer icons on the screen, what Abram jokingly called the “Flintstone effect” will make it easier for drivers to glance at their interface while maintaining their focus on the road.

Apple Carplay and Android Auto also make phone usage hands-free and safer for drivers by having commands defaulted to voice, rather than touch.

“A smartphone’s user experience is intended to do one thing: absorb your attention, make you look at it, which is the antithesis of the experience you want in a vehicle,” Abram said.

Android Auto’s functions are built on Google Maps, Google Now and voice command through Google. Other audio and messaging apps, including WhatsApp, Skype, Google Play Music and podcast players are available in Chevrolet’s system.

Apple CarPlay allows drivers to conveniently access their favorite apps. Drivers can call, send, and receive messages, and listen to music via Siri. Owners have the option of changing default settings to touchscreen. Third-party apps are also available in Apple CarPlay.

A full list of apps for both features can be found at Android.com/auto and Apple.com/ios/carplay.

Android Auto requires a phone updated to the Android Lollipop 5.0 operating system or above, and Apple Car Play requires an iPhone 5 or later.
