Short Film Starring DeNiro to Excite Downtown Area

JR, an up-and-coming filmmaker and photographer has surprised us again. He is currently filming in the eerie abandoned hospital on Ellis Island, which hasn’t been open to the public for filming in over 60 years.

The jarring film called ELLIS and will star the beloved actor Robert DeNiro. It will take viewers on a fourteen minute walk lead by DeNiro through the empty hospital (with a voiceover written by Oscar winner Eric Roth).  We listen to his thought process as he reacts to this particular environment. If millions of people have passed through Ellis Island then what am I? It is a moment in which he realizes that he in some way or another a product of Ellis Island.  He is perplexed, and overwhelmed by the journey that he knows many of the immigrants had to take through Ellis Island.

The installation in the film “Unframed-Ellis Island,” was also created by JR. The installation is made to re-enact how the space would have looked back in the early 1900’s. Scattered about the hospital are paintings of doctors working on patients, nurses meant to be conversing, and immigrants looking out windows searching for a new found hope.

The original hospital was built in 1902. It was a integral part of the Ellis Island journey, as immigrants from all over the world passed through to be examined in hopes of being administered into America. The hospital held 750 people, including specific rooms for people with diagnosed “psychopathic,” disorders and contagious diseases; as well as a laboratory and morgue.

If you were in the downtown area within the past couple of days, you may have walked past a mural of the faces of many immigrants. This mural is to reflect the film, which will be featured at a pop-up exhibition site located at 130 Orchard street, just above Delancy Street, the LES. The exhibition will run from Wednesday November 4th through-Sunday November 8th. It is free and open to the public from 12pm-6pm.

Don’t worry, if you can’t make the exhibition, JR is offering to send out the film to those who are interested. All you have to do is fill out this form here.

Burton Morris: Pop Art That Features America’s Favorite Pop

There is a large chance that you have seen Burton Morris’s artwork in the most common places, one of them being in the TV show Friends. Yes, Friends. Look closer the next time you watch it.

Burton’s artwork is quirky, and vivacious. It embodies pop art fused with cartoon-like images. His work is known world wide as it was featured in the 76th Annual Academy Awards, the White House, FIFA World cup soccer and the United Nations.

Burton is a native of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and attended Carnegie Mellon University in 1986. He became successful after graduation and centered his energy more towards advertising and thus created the Burton Morris studios in 1990.

His work in a way emulates Andy Warhol. Warhol was also an iconic artist who used bold designs and fused them with everyday objects.

Morris states on his website, “I choose to paint objects and icons. I want to challenge the way we view everyday ideas in our modern day culture by representing the common object singularly, reducing it to an iconic graphic form and adding an energetic and colorful twist.”

His exhibition at the Soho Contemporary Art Gallery will be featuring an art piece of 100 Coca Cola illustrations in honor of Coca-Colas 100 year anniversary.

Coca-Cola is an iconic drink that embodies family values.

“Coca-Cola is one of the staples of our time. To me it represents family dinners, nights out with friends, and classic Americana,” says Morris.

This particular project was built a great deal on experiment. The artwork is made with a series of mediums including spray paint, screen printing, and acrylic paint.

There will be a Burton exhibition coming to Soho on November 20th 2015. For more information visit his website.

Best-Selling Author to Appear in Soho

Courtesy of: wikipedia.org

Beloved, international best-selling author, Cheryl Strayed will appear in Soho on November 20th at House Works on 126 Crosby Street. She is most famous for her book Wild which was a #1 New York Times best selling memoir. This event will feature her new book Brave Enough.

Brave Enough, will have 100 of her most famous quotes which will shed light on her life experiences.

Cheryl Strayed is a fighter. She is the victim of an early passing of her mother caused by lung cancer. Strayed was only 22. After her mother’s death, she was completely destroyed.

“My whole life sort of ended when my mom died. I had to remake it again and be a new person in the world without my mom,” states Cheryl according to Interview magazine.

Everyone responds to grief differently. In order to compensate for the lack of her mother, she turned to sex and drugs. Although this reaction to grief is heartbreaking, it is not uncommon. The mother daughter relationship is an inexplicable relationship filled with an overabundance of tenderness. As defined by Carolyn Walter who has a PhD and wrote Grief and Loss Across the Lifespan: A Biopsychosocial Perspective, the “mother daughter relationship is considered the most intimate of all the parent-child relationships.”

In order to redeem her direction down the wrong path, Cheryl decided to take a 1,110 mile journey along the Pacific Crest Trail. Wild, is the compelling story of a journey that took her three months to complete.  The book was also made into a movie starring Reese Witherspoon, which received an Academy Award nomination.

Wild, was groundbreaking and, according to Srayed’s website, was Oprah Winfrey’s first selection for her book club. She opens up about her experience in grief while providing flashbacks of her personal life.

“We are not allowed to be deeply sad. Grief is a thing that we are encouraged to ‘let go of,’ to ‘move on from,’ and we are told specifically how this should be done,” states Strayed in one of her essays The Love of my Life published by The Sun Magazine.

She is also the author of an essay collection called Tiny Beautiful Things, the novel Torch and the prospective quotes collection Brave Enough set to come out on October 27th 2015. Her essays have also been published in The Best American Essays, the New York Times, the Washington Post Magazine, Vogue, Salon, The Sun, and Tin House.

‘Cheryl Strayed’ is actually the author’s original name. She decided to change her name in an effort to break away from her haunting past.

“. . .Nothing fit until one day when the word strayed came to mind. Immediately I looked it up in the dictionary and knew it was mine. It’s layered definitions spoke directly to my life and also struck a poetic chord: to wonder from the proper path, to deviate from the correct course, to be lost, to become wild, to become without a father or a mother. . .” she states according to The New York Times.

Strayed has also become a cultural icon. Many people have become inspired to quote her on their bodies with tattoos. Her tattoo was featured in “Pen & Ink,” by Issac Fitzgerald and Wendy MacNaughton, which is a book that highlights various tattoo’s of many artists and writers.

“Strayed gives the impression of tapping raw emotion while at the same time exerting tremendous authorial control. Her carefully honed sentences are as sharp as knives,” states Bernard Cooper according to Strayed’s website.
