South Street Seaport Museum Announces $4.8 Million Renovation Plans

8266435847_3811cabf62_oThe South Street Seaport Museum (SSSM), along with The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) have announced $4.8 million in federal funds for the renovation of SSSM’S Water Street properties as an education and community space.

This is all made possible thanks to a grant from LMDC, which is funded through Community Development Block Grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer told The National Maritime Historical Society that, “The South Street Seaport is where New York City began.” These funds will help ensure the museum’s “long term vitality and ability to provide appropriate space for its extraordinary programming.”

Captain Jonathan Boulware, the Museum’s Executive Director, is thrilled that the LMDC is supporting the Seaport Museum saying, “This grant will support the renovation and activation of the Seaport Museum’s historic buildings in support of its education and community programs. Together with significant restorations of our ships, these new spaces will form the basis for outstanding programming.”

The South Street Seaport Museum, located on 12 Fulton Street, engages visitors in the history of the port city of New York, where goods, labor and cultures are exchanged through work, commerce and the interaction of diverse communities. Using artifacts, historic ships and the buildings of the district themselves, the museum programs shine a light historical New York while keeping it exciting and interactive.

With such close access to Pace University students, as well as elementary school kids, there is no doubt these renovations will attract curious new visitors with a newfound appreciation for New York.

Mules (Try Kendall + Kylie Essie Peaked Suede Mule Pumps)

Before you rule this one out because they were designed by the lip-plumping, Victoria’s Secret modeling teens of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, they’re sold at Neiman Marcus so how bad can they be?

Platform Sandals (Try Rag & Bone’s Venus sandal)

Stop and Smell the Roses at Macy’s Spring 2016 Flower Show

They say to “bloom where you are planted,” and what better place than at New York’s at! From March 20 to April 3 at Macy’s Herald Square, commemorate our country’s vast variety of flowers and sceneries.

With the help from partners including Girl Scouts, Homewood Suites by Hilton, Krazy Glue, Royal Caribbean International and Sinclair, this two-week celebration is action-packed and picked to perfection.

Stop by LeSportsac to create your very own floral crown and when you get hungry, you can head to GODIVA for a chocolatier demonstration that includes a chocolate dipped strawberry tasting! Listen to acclaimed a cappella group, The Filharmonic or watch a performance by cast members of the hit Broadway musical “Beautiful—The Carole King Musical.”

Make it into a family fun day with face painting, arts and crafts and balloon twisting in the Kids’ Department. Girl scouts will be assisting in creating nature journals, as well.

Perhaps the most rewarding part of this event is making a difference. The Juniors’ department is teaming up with Operation PROM to donate a dress for every prom dress sold. Tackle girl power with flower power, am I right?  There will even be a special performance by YouTube singing sensation Andie Case. Eliminate the stress of dress shopping (trust me, it’s still fresh in my mind from three years ago) by turning your outfit hunt into a Prom Shopping Party with Macy’s.

There’s something for everyone and if that won’t urge you to stop and smell the roses, here’s an incentive: it’s free admission. Just come by during regular store hours.

This list is of activities is merely scratching the surface. Check out the complete itinerary with dates and times here.
