Get your flapper dresses and zoot suits ready ladies and gents! Governors Island is hosting the annual Jazz Age Lawn Party on the weekends of June 13 and August 15.
Michael Arenella, host and originator of the bash, has put together the best prohibition era-inspired event around. Learn the hottest dance steps of the ’20s, pose for vintage portraits, compete in a pie contest, and check out the period’s traditional motorcar exhibition. There is even a Kidland feature that will have carnival games with prizes for the youngsters.
This family-oriented affair offers the majestic opportunity to travel back in time. There will be a variety of performances including Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra playing the most popular jazz hits of the generation as well as Queen Esther, The Minksy Sisters, Peter Mintun, Gelber & Manning and much more. After dancing Charleston style and listening to antique gramophones, guests can enjoy decade-appropriate cocktails at the bar. Beverages being served include St-Germain, the “Clover Club Collection”, and a variety of martini sparkling wines. There will also be a hand picked selection of New York’s picnic-perfect chefs and gourmet food trucks, which will be announced in the up coming weeks.
The Jazz Age Lawn Party started with a small group of just 50 friends and fans and was originally produced by the island. However, in its third year, it was handed over to Arenella to take over and promote the event, which has been growing in popularity each year. For Arenella, his jazz passion does not just end here; he is also invited to host, create and perform Jazz-Age festivities around the world all year long. This day-long party has been deemed by The New York Times as one of the most memorable events of 2011 and 2012.
This celebration is a cash only event, however ATMs will be available on the lawn. For tickets and more information please visit their website.
