Proper nutrition is extremely important for anyone, but often, people skip out on eating or cooking healthy because 1.) it’s not as convenient and 2.) it usually costs more to buy healthy and organic food. However, with these tips, we make it easier so you can lead a more healthy and cost effective life style without breaking the bank.
1.) Make a Grocery List and Stick to It!
Often times, if we’re feeling hungry or impulsive, we stray from our lists and up buying snacks or junk food we do not need! Take a look in your cabinets and refrigerator before you make that trip to the supermarket and write down a list of things that you need. By doing this, you will avoid last-minute purchases for things that aren’t on your list (or in you budget).
2.) Buy in Bulk
Buying in bulk is probably one of the most effective ways to cut down and save money. Buying large quantities of anything from vegetables to meats and grains also cuts down on shopping time so there is more time to prepare healthy meals.
3.) Prepare Your Own Meals as Often as Possible
Don’t get us wrong, it is still great to go out to dinner with family and friends every once in awhile. However, by cooking your own meals, you will know what ingredients are going into them and control what is going into your body. Though time consuming, plan ahead in advance on what meals you will be making that week. Therefore, you won’t have any excuses as to spending money on food that is not necessarily good for you!
4.) Opt for smaller portions
Restaurants tend to overflow their plates with food, which automatically makes us overeat. Try cutting down on portion sizes, and eat more frequently during the day instead of skipping meals and eating large quantities all at once. Having smaller quantities of food will not only make you healthier, but also help you save money by dividing up your meals.
5.) Try substituting ingredients!
There are several alternatives when cooking or baking where you can manage to sneak more healthy and affordable ingredients into your meals. Don’t have butter or want to substitute it with a healthier alternative? Try avocado puree instead of butter when baking. They’re both fats (in different ways!) and avocado has the same consistency as butter at room temperature. You can see a list of possible substitutions here.
So try out some of these tips, and start living a more healthier and affordable way of life. We will be continuing to update this page with more tips throughout the weeks, so be sure to check back for more ways to eat healthy on a budget!
