Art In DUMBO has announced its upcoming schedule of special events, happenings, and exhibition openings for the fall. DUMBO residents and visitors can look forward to an impressive lineup.
DUMBO is a destination for art in Brooklyn, home to galleries, artist residency programs, public art throughout its parks and streets, and many art and cultural organizations. From photography to painting, street art to sculpture, DUMBO’s galleries bring the work of local, national, and international artists to the Brooklyn waterfront with events and exhibitions that are free and open to the public.
In addition to their regular event and exhibition schedules, on the first Thursday of every month, DUMBO’s galleries and art institutions stay open late for the First Thursday Gallery Walk: September 1, October 6, November 3, and December 1, from 6–9pm. Through September 29, the Live at the Archway! series presents music and performance every Thursday at 6pm at the Archway under the Manhattan Bridge.

LIGHT YEAR 17: Earth Revisited

As humankind evolves further into digital, non-terrestrial realities, Earth Revisited presents work by artists who reexamine their relationship to the earth itself. Featuring Danielle de Picciotto and Lary 7, Vadim Schaeffler and Pablo Paolo Kilian, Nina Sobell and Laura Ortman, Sarah Walko and Justin King, Laszlo Zsolt Bordos, Eike Berg and Jarboe, Shir Lieberman, Jonathan Phelps and Alon Cohen. Curated by Leo Kuelbs. The Manhattan Bridge comes alive with LIGHT YEAR, a program of projected video art presented the First Thursday of every month. Founded in honor of the United Nations’ declaration of 2015 as The Year of Light and Light Art, LIGHT YEAR includes a well-rounded program of video artists from around the globe, highlighting DUMBO’s role as an important hub for technology and the arts.
Photoville 2016

DUMBO-based gallery United Photo Industries is pleased to present Photoville: New York City’s free premier photo destination, built from repurposed shipping containers and featuring photography exhibitions, talks & workshops, evening screenings, and an outdoor beer garden. Celebrating its 5th year on the Brooklyn waterfront, Photoville 2016 will be centrally located in Brooklyn Bridge Plaza directly under the iconic bridge in DUMBO.

Audiences are welcome to visit the studios of Smack Mellon’s 2016–2017 fellowship artists: Mike Crane, Nona Faustine, Cate Giordano, Erica Magrey, Joiri Minaya, Kameelah Rasheed, Tyler Henry, and James Mulvaney. The artists will have their latest work-in-progress on view, and visitors will have the opportunity to meet the artists in their studios all weekend.
Live at the Archway! VJ Farkas

For the closing night of this summer’s Live at the Archway! Programming, VJ Farkas will provide music and video. Farkas is member of of the Hungarian visual arts group Glowing Bulbs and 3_search, the curatorial team behind DUMBO’s LIGHT YEAR program. From May through September, Live at the Archway! hosts DUMBO and Brooklyn talent, presenting a broad range of music and performance genres.

Eighteen exhibits the work of Dev Harlan, Cheryl Wing-Zi Wong and Jayoung Yoon, three artists working in sculpture, installation and transformation over time. The exhibition utilizes the spatial concept of the Usagi Gallery, architect Sou Fujimoto’s design based on eighteen movable panels that divide, striate and give impermeability to the space. In Eighteen, the panels are used not as surfaces to display 2D work, but as interventions in space that divide time.

This Friday Next Friday Gallery | Patricia Brace: Ballet

Ballet is a performance art installation that uses mimesis as a means of transferring and reversing childhood associations with loss and failure. In Ballet, performance artist Patricia Brace covers the four gallery walls of This Friday Next Friday Gallery with mirrors and performs a 30 minute ballet barre class within this confining, reflective environment. Returning to ballet after a 20 year hiatus, Brace subverts expectations of viewership, ballet, and rehearsal by performing a ballet barre class (typically a private training exercise) for an audience.Brace has created 6” Ballet dolls and a Ballet Basics exercise video to accompany the installation and performance.
Smack Mellon | Bobby Neel Adams: Memento Mori

Bobby Neel Adams’ photo project Memento Mori follows the tradition of the 16th Century Dutch Vanitas painting movement, which took decaying objects as its subject matter, symbolizing the ephemeral nature of life and the certainty of death. Though none of the photographed subjects are endangered, they pay homage to the many species that have been pushed to the margins of existence and of their habitats by the relentless growth of human civilization.
Smack Mellon | Ghost of a Dream: When the Smoke Clears: The Fair Housing Project

Ghost of a Dream’s The Fair Housing Project explores the position of art fairs in the contemporary art world and their impact on artists, collectors, spectators, and art itself. Using discarded crates, carpeting, and swag collected from art fairs across the United States, the artist duo built a small house and a series of other objects to draw a focus on both the wastefulness and the importance of the art fair system.

LIGHT YEAR presents Digital Fairy Tales: Volume One, a series of video and sound pieces inspired by Germanic tales collected by Xavier Schönwerth in the 19th century. This presentation of these weird and wonderful tales will bring seemingly ancient archetypal contexts and references into the 21st century. Featuring Rani Messias and Kinga Toth, Sarah Mock and Daniela Imhoff, Richard Jochum and Kriss Roebling, Integrated Visions and Miss Natasha Enquist, Radka Salmannova, Thomas Rotenberg, Josh Graham. Curated by Sandra Ratkovic and Leo Kuelbs. Digital Fairy Tales: Volume One will be on view at the Made in NY Media Center by IFP during the month of October.

A.I.R Gallery | Book signing: Openings: A Memoir from the Women’s Art Movement, New York City, 1970-1990 by Sabra Moore

Artist, writer, and activist Sabra Moore will give a reading and slide presentation from her forthcoming book Openings: A Memoir from the Women’s Art Movement, New York City, 1970-1990. Moore was a coordinator of the 1984 women artists’ demonstration against MoMA for its lack of inclusivity; a coordinator of the 16-part exhibition Views By Women Arts (1982); organizer of the collaborative show Reconstruction Project (1984), including a 13-foot Reconstructed Codex with art pages by 20 women artists; and co-organizer with Josely Carvalho of Connections Project/Conexus (1987) a collaborative exhibit between women artists from the United States and Brazil. She was a long-time member of the Heresies Collective, president of NYC/Women’s Caucus for Art (1980-1982), a member of WAR (Women Artists in Revolution) and WAC (Women’s Action Coalition), as well as a counsellor at Women’s Services (1970-1972), the first legal abortion clinic in NYC.

Hilary Lorenz: Birdwatchers features color linoleum block prints on paper, cut and collaged onto the walls, representing bird species living in Brooklyn Bridge Park sighted during the artist’s solo and group bird watching sessions. In weekend public workshops and during DUMBO’s First Thursday Gallery Walks, Lorenz will give short printmaking presentations and encourage the public to ink and print one or several of the pre-cut bird linoleum blocks, and add them to a natural habitat wall in 99 Plymouth’s Community Room.
