1. Chili Fest
Chelsea Market (Chelsea)
Sun, Jan 31st at 7pm
There is only one dish that can fend off the cold and warm our bodies and souls this winter–it’s meaty, it’s beany, it’s spicy–it’s chili! Supplied exclusively by Dickson’s Farmstand Meats, The Chili Fest at the Chelsea Market building is an 800-foot concourse of chili stations from some of New York’s best restaurants.
2. Bitesize Macarons
At all Baked by Melissa locations
(Check site for store hours)
When all other cupcake empires are falling, one still stands. Why? Well, because Baked by Melissa never tried to be big. The tiny colorful mini cupcakes that pack a serious punch of flavor, will now share the spotlight with bite size macarons, available in Melissa’s most popular flavors: cookie dough, red velvet, sugar cookie, snickerdoodle, salted caramel and double chocolate. Pop on in and try ‘em out.
3. Radical Elektra New York Live Arts (Chelsea)
Jan 20th-23rd and Jan, 27th-30th at 7:30pm
Revenge is a dish best served… with pop? Expect a very radical rendition of Sophocles’s Elektra from performance artist Ann Liv Young, who collaborated with award-winning theater artist Annie Dorsen for this production. Nothing is off limits here and we guarantee revenge has never tasted this…well, we’ll let you decide the flavor on this one…
4. Beer Bourbon BBQ
The Tunnel (Chelsea) Sat, Jan 30th from 5:30-9:30pm
60 beers, 40 bourbons and a ton of BBQ, the Beer, Bourbon and BBQ Festival is not for the faint of heart. The organizers went down, deep in the south to bring New Yorkers the best Southern pitmasters, brewers and distillers. With unlimited samplings of booze and pork, music and eating contest, (and with two sessions already sold out) you’ll want to get these tickets ASAP.
5. Hot Chocolate Festival
Check site for participating stores
Sat, Jan 23rd- Sun, Jan 31st
During Valrhona Hot Chocolate Festival, participating shops will be offering unique hot chocolate concoctions to help New Yorkers stay warm and to raise funds for one of the city’s most important non-profit organizations, City Harvest. Participating shops include Laduree, La Maison du Chocolat, François Payard Patisserie, Dominique Ansel Bakery and Kitchen, Brooklyn Roasting Company, MarieBelle, Doughnut Plant, Dough and more.
6. Mutating Comics
The Strand Bookstore (East Village)
Thurs, Jan 28th from 7-8pm
Comic buff and historian, Ramzi Fawaz, with artist and LGBT activist Phil Jimenez (Infinite Crisis, The Invisibles and Wonder Woman), will discuss his new book “The New Mutants: Superheroes and the Radical Imagination of American Comics”. Using the lens of queer theory, the book is an in-depth study that explores how characters in American comics construct and transform identities. This is sure to be a fascinating talk!
