Gogobot is an innovative planning tool that tailors recommendations for places to stay, eat and play to your specific tastes. It also allows you to share your great experiences with people who have the same interests as you; people in your “tribes”. Gogobots ‘GoGo This Week’ feature empowers you to discover and take advantage of great events, openings and exhibits throughout the city each week. Here are some exciting events and sites to check out in downtown New York this week, courtesy of Gogobot. Visit the website or download the app for more GoGo This Week upcoming events.
Webster Hall (East Village)
Sat, Jan 16th from 2:30-5:30pm
After you escape the coppers at Gogobot’s “Prohibition Escape”
event this Thursday, hit up Webster Hall’s 1920s themed tasting
event East Ville Des Folies. Do what the Roaring 20s did best, enjoy
copious amounts of giggle water (beer & whisky) and live entertainment
inspired by the Vaudevillian culture of the early 20th century.
2. Textbook Art
Klein Sun Gallery (Chelsea)
MON-SATURDAY 10AM-6PM (THROUGH FEBRUARY 13TH)
Textbooks–their physical and emotional (to say nothing of economic)
weight have come to define our academic endeavours. The school tomes
on display at Klein Sun Gallery are used to create spectacular art
pieces by Beijing-based artist Li Hongbo. If not for the artists and
social commentary value, some may want to stop by to see the symbol of
their school years pierced on a spike.
Le Poisson Rouge (Check site for complete list of venues)
Wed, Jan 13th-Sun, Jan 17th (check site for times)
The Winter Jazz Fest is one of our favorite New York winter
performance series; the artists come nothing short of blowing our
minds every time. The lineup this year is no different. Expect killer
shows from Kamasi Washington, Takuya Kuroda, Terrace Martin, Kris
Bowers, Colin Stetson, Mark Guiliana, and Dawn of Midi. Tickets start
at $20.
Jimmy’s No. 43 (East Village)
Mon, Jan 11th from 7-9 pm
If you are into cassoulet, but not in the fiendish kind of way that
merits hours and hours of tastings, you can skip Jimmy’s No. 43’s
main tasting event (8th Annual Cassoulet Cookoff) and instead, sit
down to the prix fixe cassoulet dinner where you can taste three of
the best cassoulets paired with three custom cocktails off the new
drink menu. $45
5. Ice Vodka
Mehanata (Lower East Side)
Thurs-Sat 7pm-4am
The sub-zero vodka room at the famed Mehanata bar is one the many
weird wonders of New York. For those who have been complaining of a
non-winter weather and global warming, can wrap themselves in antique
Soviet gear, step into the frigid vodka room (lined with all types of
vodka, naturally) and guzzle up to 6 shots of vodka in under two
minutes… Strange? Yes, but certainly worth a try. $20
6. American Realness Festival
The Abrons Arts Center (Lower East Side)
Thurs, Jan 7th-Sun, Jan 17th (Check site for times)
American Realness Festival takes home the prize for introducing
audiences to otherworldly (and at times controversial) genre-crossing
performances. Though it bills itself as an American festival,
exploring various themes of contemporary American culture, this
year’s lineup is decidedly more global. Tickets start at $20.
The PIT Loft (Chelsea)
Thurs, Jan 14th & Sat, Jan 16th at 10:30pm
Shakespeare’s greatest play, Hamlet, is at its best when turned into a
one man show starring Gary Busey’s unofficial impersonator David
Carl. David Carl shares the stage with hand puppets and multimedia
“acts.” A bit psychotic and a whole lot of hilarious make this one
man show our first must see performance of 2016. $20
