1. Christmas for Orphans
Jimmy’s No. 43 (East Village)
Fri, Dec 25th from 1-4pm
Being away from home can be tough. Being away from home at Christmas pretty much sucks, but it does not have to mean being alone. Jimmy’s No. 43 invites expats, orphans and all those that are far from home to a homestyle brunch served by Tito King’s Kitchen. A meal here will remind you that Christmas, like all good things, is best when shared.
2. Caroling New York
Washington Square Park (Greenwich Village)
Thur, Dec 24th from 5-6pm
If the Christmas lights, the dressed windows of shops and random people wearing Santa hats on the train have not put you in the holiday spirit, you’re probably a closeted grinch… just kidding. Nothing puts us in the spirit like a good ‘ol Christmas tune. So, instead of sitting in the corner with earbuds staring at our phones, we are going to spread holiday cheer by joining the Christmas Eve Caroling at Washington Square Park. Songbooks are provided, just don’t forget your Santa hat.
3. MatzoBall
Output and Capitale (Williamsburg and Bowery)
Thurs, Dec 24th from 9pm-2am
No need to fret about leaving the city or Brooklyn to party at the biggest Jewish singles ball, Matzoball. This year both Brooklyn’s Output and Manhattan’s Capitale will be hosting this outrageously fun party. Mazel tov and happy hunting, ladies and gents! $40
4. Wine Cupcakes
Magnolia Bakery (Upper West Side)
Tues, Dec 22nd from 6-7:30pm
We want perfectly iced holiday cakes and cupcakes and that’s why we are bringing a bottle of wine with us to Magnolia’s BYOB Holiday Cupcakes and Wine event… ‘cause, you know, nothing steadies the hand like a drink. Whatever the results, we’ll be taking home decorating and icing skills along with 6 cupcake masterpieces, all done under the influence.
5. The High Life at Lowlife
Lowlife (Lower East Side)
Mon-Sat 6-10:30pm
Any restaurant that relies on seasonal and local ingredients is a winner in our minds, but there is something extra special about Lowlife, which opened last month. Maybe it’s the Japanese leanings of the menu, the open kitchen and the fact that Lowlife serves high end meals in a down to earth setting. Or we are just suckers for Borscht! Whatever the secret, we have no issue coming back for further investigation.
6. Graphitti and Hip Hop Mash Up
The National Arts Club (Gramercy)
Mon-Fri 10am-5pm (through Jan, 2)
Documentary photographer Janette Beckman has been shooting hip hop and rap artists since the early 80s, when she moved to New York. For “Mash Up,” Beckman and artist Cey Adams worked together to combine Beckman’s portraits of hip hop world greats with legends of the graffiti world to create a vibrant, colorful “Mash Up” of New York’s hip hop and graffiti scene.
7. Luxury with Values
The Vaute (Soho)
Daily from 12-8pm (through Dec, 30th)
If you have a fashion lover on your list whose aphorisms include, local, eco and vegan and animal-friendly then swing by the Vaute Couture Pop-Up Shop for some fabulous threads for both men and women. While you’re at it, try on one of their fabulous coats.
8. Racy Nutcracker
Minetta Lane Theater (Greenwich Village)
Through Jan, 17 (Check site for times)
The Nutcracker is one of the most famous ballets in the world. A classic children’s story of love and the triumph of good over evil. At the same time, it is a story about secret fantasies and unexpressed desires. Nutcracker Rouge from Company XIV takes the Nutcracker and cracks it wide open, so to speak. The treat is a sensual performance that plays out the erotic themes in grand burlesque style.
